Upper Dells Wisconsin river this Sunday

check out this link and view the 8 mile paddle - http://wisdells.net/outdoor-recreation/where-we-go/paddling-the-upper-dells/

This is what I would like to do on Sunday. We can decide if we want to do the 7.5 mile loop or the 8 mile loop. I don't know how long it will take but since we don't have to shuttle cars, that will save us time putting in.

If anyone wants to carpool from Madison, let me know -[masked]-2929.

We will meet at 10 a.m. at the put in site using the directions and map on the link:

Go downtown then run left on river road, then left again on Illinois Ave. There you’ll find parking along the road right on the river bank with an easy launch for paddlers. This spot also keeps paddlers far enough away from the Dam to cause much worry.

We should be able to take breaks so bring some food along. Also bring plenty of warm clothing and a PFD. The water is cooling off and a PFD may save your life in this river.

Afterwards, we can see how we feel and possibly stop somewhere for dinner.

The Madison Kayak Meetup Group is not an outfitter. We are not insured. We do not provide watercraft. We are a group of friends that get together and enjoy the outdoors. Therefore, when you travel with us you do so at your own risk. Your participation is your acceptance of this waiver.

Even though we had the occasional wind and upstream challenges, there was enough beauty, sun, and calm water to keep our spirits high and energy lasting for about 5-6 miles of paddling. I recommend this route only during the Dells off season because of the motor boat traffic. We had an enjoyable experience and met up with some other paddlers to share stories. Thanks to all the came along! - Barbara

Thanks Barbara. I would never have guessed that about Cherokee Marsh. I hope you have a wonderful trip.

Ann, Just so you know, Cherokee Marsh is very open and can be more challenging in the wind. Go early to avoid more of the winds! Have fun!

7:42 Sunday: This meetup is still on. We think we will be protected from the wind and we can shorten the trip if need be. For those who want to still come, see you at 10 a.m. Victoria said she wants to paddle this area next weekend, so there will be another chance to paddle the upper dells. My phone number is[masked]

Nicole and I have decided to go to Cherokee Marsh at 9 instead. We just don't think we want to worry about the winds....not as experienced as you all. Have fun!

Are we still on? The winds are going to be 15 to 20 so not sure how that will impact us.

I actually bring a small towel to dry my feet and then put on some warm socks or slippers otherwise my feet will be too cold. Most important is to wear fast drying clothes in layers and pack dry change of clothes in water proof sack, just in case you get really wet.

I don't have any neoprene boots. Will I be ok? I haven't kayaked in cooler weather. What do you suggest wearing?

I won't need to borrow your kayak any more Barbara, so maybe someone else will be able to use it. My husband has decided to skip the poultry show and so we will both plan to meet you in the Dells.

I signed up but also need to borrow/rent/share a boat. I used to live in the area, but can't think of any places to get boats. Anyone want to go tandem?

    October 13, 2011

  • Carolyn

I signed up for this, but like Jim don't have a boat. Don't suppose anyone would want to go tandem or have another boat to share?

    October 13, 2011

  • Barbara

Anyone have a boat the Jim can use? Shannon will be using my extra boat. If you have a boat for Jim, let me know and I will send you his cell phone number for details.

I would need a boat to participate. I am a good sized guy...so if your boat is a valley or made for someone smaller....I will not be able to go as the boat will not fit me. I would like to car pool with you if available. Thanks Jim

Looks like I do have to work my second job on Sunday afternoon. (Sad to say.) I would still like to go if it looks like the time works out. I will wait and see what you all decide and go from there.

This looks god. It sounds like the trip someone else recommended and mentioned parking at a scout camp.
