New Meetup: Sugar River - County Road EE to Sweet Minnihaha Campground ( about 8 Miles)

Announcing a new Meetup for Madison Kayaking Meetup Group!

What: Sugar River - County Road EE to Sweet Minnihaha Campground ( about 8 Miles)

When: Saturday, July 3,[masked]:30 AM

Where:
Sugar River Cty Hwy EE
Cty Hwy EE Intersection of Cty Hwy EE and Sugar River
Albany, WI 53502

A number of members wanted to paddle Sugar River, about 20 miles west of Madison. A popular route is from Attica to Albany, WI. It is approximately 7.3 miles and is listed in Paddling Southern Wisconsin, where we get a lot of good paddling routes for the membership. HOWEVER THIS ROUTE IS CURRENTLY BLOCKED BY BRUSH AND DOWNED TREES. So we are adjusting this trip and entering the river at CTY HWY EE and the Sugar River. Paddling to Albany, WI; portaging around the Albany dam at the city pier, then paddling to Sweet Minnihaha Campground N4697 County Road E Brodhead, WI[masked] - (608)[masked] where we will exit. This is a private park and we should expect about a $2.00 parking fee per vehicle. They also rent watercraft and will shuttle you for a fee. The address is Brodhead but the campground is North of the city.

Since this is a holiday weekend, I would like to start early in the day, meeting at the Cty Hwy EE launch site by 8:30 am. There we will unload kayaks and shuttle cars to Sweet Minnihaha campground and return. If all goes well we will be able to launch between 9:00-9:30am (it always takes longer than you think when shuttling vehicles and getting everyone organized).

We should complete the trip by noon-1:00pm, giving you the balance of the day for other holiday activities.

Please remember to bring an extra set of clothes, gloves, hat, shoes, life vest, eye wear, flashlight, fluids, snacks, and any other safety equipment needed (kayaks and canoes do tip on occasion so having a dry set of clothes is nice). This area of the river is expected to be clear of obstructions. Put your phone and camera in a watertight bags as they don?t work well when wet. I?ll have a phone along for safety purposes. Please remember fluids and snacks. Please let me know if you cannot swim or are a poor swimmer or have any physical handicaps. Well-behaved children are welcome if they have previous kayaking experience. The landing does not have a bathroom. The launching and exit areas are on the East side of the river.

If poor weather is forecasted, I?ll post a cancellation notice early by Saturday morning, no later than 6:00am. Excellent weather updates can be found here http://www.weather.com/weather/map/interactive/USWI0411

There are rentals at the campground. It's warming up, again, remember your fluids, hats, paddling gloves, etc. Normally there are not bugs over moving water, but you still may want to bring a bug spray. This should be a fun one and a great way to start your holiday.
