Kayak support for the Hudson River Swim for Life

22nd annual Hudson River Swim for Life to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This is always a great event with a 3 mile swim across the Hudson from Kingsland Pt. Park to Nyack, and/or the 1 mile swim on our side of the river.

This was my first time and it was an amazing experience! It was wonderful to guide and encourage the swimmers along the way, and you could actually feel they appreciated us by their side. The weather couldn't have been better, and the Hudson did it best to give the swimmers a great last swim for this event (don't remember seeing it so quiet and still). Thank you Linda for helping us all be part in this wonderful and worthwhile cause. Thanks to my team mates for their support and guidance; this is what I love Liquid Skies; open hearted, always giving and thinking of others! A marvelous day indeed!

This was my first experience with this kind of event. It was wonderful; it was a thrill to hear all the applause and cheering as the last swimmer walked onto the beach; Thanks to all for the monumental task of organiizing and running this truly great fundraiser. It inspired me to look for other oportunities to offer my support. I took a lot of photos. If anyone is interested I will email them to you. Thanks again.

Fabulous day for all - Thanks Lucy, Katherine, Allen, George & Richard for helping us out today. It was last swim for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and I think it was the best one. The swimmers were so happy and the kayakers encouraged them all to get to the finish line.

Directions: get to Rt 9 in Tarrytown from wherever you are coming from. Follow Rt 9 north to Palmer Ave & turn left. Follow down to the Hudson. Turn left into Kingsland Pt. park, follow thru the 1st parking lot & turn left & go downhill - park as close as you can down there. Early on they will have folks to help you unload and portage down to the put it. It's a bit of a portage so take wheels if you have them. Get your whistles, noodles & flag and we will meet after the check-in point to cross to Nyack together. Remember that this is a charity event and organized mostly by volunteers. It is as organized as it can be. Stay with our group, I am head kayaker for group KZC 4. We will launch at 7:45am sharp. If you are late please cross with others don't go alone

I hope this event is organized more clearly than the driving directions. It says, "...287 West to New York State Thruway (North). Exit 9 (Tarrytown - last exit before bridge)." Does this mean we are going west TOWARDS the thruway and taking Exit 9 from 287? or we are getting ON Thruway (North) and taking Exit 9 from the Thruway? I suppose this is obvious to people who drive 287 all the time. I'm not one of those.

OK mates - we will launch at 7:45 AM sharp from Kingsland to Nyack. The swim starts at 9 from Nyack. Have your boats loaded on the beach and your paperwork in. Allow time for processing. If you are late try to find someone to cross over with. Get there early to get a good parking spot. Closer parking less portage. Bring wheels if you have them. Make sure you get a noodle and flags before launching. See you there.

I've been struggling for over a month and a half to register for this thing -- had some technical glitches at first and it took their staff forever to get back to me.

It's finally looking like I'll be able to register -- but I can only attend the safety meeting if someone is available who can pick me up at the nearest Metro North station (assuming it isn't walking distance) and then drop me off at the nearest New Haven line Metro North station after the meeting. Is there anyone who can help out? Thanks.

    • Linda

Hi Jonathan, sorry I won't be going to the meeting because I've been to several over the years so I can't help you with car pooling. I can help you with swimmer rescue technique if you can't attend the meeting. We can go over that before we get in the water on that day.

Thanks Linda. Unfortunately I've been having a lot of trouble signing up -- had technical problems initially and it took them forever to get back to me and I'm getting really frustrated, so I may not participate. But if I do, I would definitely appreciate your orientation which I'm sure would be totally adequate.

I plan on attending the safety meeting on Wednesday at Sleepy Hollow High School. This is my first time in supporting this event.

I will not be going to the meeting on Wednesday, I live in central Jersey and on a weeknight just can't travel that far. A friend will be taking notes, and would also appreciate any tips on the day of the swim.

    • Linda

Hi Fred, please check the website http://wch.swimforlif...... for instructions if you're not sure. I recommend you attend the safety meeting. Thanks for your support.

  • Linda

Please everyone make sure that you attend a safety meeting and know how to rescue a swimmer. This meetup is to support the swimmers. Please see the website for sign-up and instructions. One year I had to rescue a teenage girl and take her to a motorboat out of the loop as it was so rough there were not enough jet skiis or small craft to come and get her. After that I was alone and had to navigate back to the swim alone. It can be scary out there when the water is rough. Know your ability maintain safety at all time. Remember if you go in - you can't help anyone and can take away support from the swim. Thanks for all your support.
