sunday snowshoe at rockwood

we can avoid the lift lines by using snow shoes to the back hills of rockwood.

rockwood at Pocantico The Park offers many varied training routes and in the last 5 years New York State created access to Rockwood State Park that allows additional running routes most notably routes that parallel the Hudson River. you can run on soft surface carriage trails and many times not repeat any trail. but for us we will be going cross country. the parking area is at the end of rt 117. going east---go past rockefeller state park entrance to the END. there you will see a parking garage on the hill on left. we can use that lot or the small outdoor lot below it. the entrance for rockwood is across the street. bring lunch--we can also bring wine to warm us. my cell[masked]

GO TO THE END ON RT117 (there is no exit from the taconic going south to rt-117). north only.

rt -117 becomes phelps way then kendal way--just stay to the left at the end of 117.

the parking lot is on the left, BUT--if you go left onto hospital access rd you can use the parking structure. just in case if no snow removal

I'll have to be back at my car by 1:00 or so, but I know Rockwood well and can get back on my own. Looking forward to seeing you!

the location allows for an easy return for anyone who needs to get back. large fields running along the hudson, hard to get lost.
if the pace is too slow or too short a hike, like kayaking, you can go circles around the group,
i always try to set up a split off point, where those who want to return can go back safely or to those who wish to press on---have at it.
as i stated before---this is a not a hard core hiking group and it is difficult to set up an outing that satisfies both the slower and those looking for a hard workout

Just wondering...do you have a plan for how long time-wise or distance-wise you're planning to snowshoe for? I think I love snowshoeing ALMOST as much as kayaking :-)

I've been wanting to try snowshoeing. I'm so bummed that this falls on a bad date for me! Can't wait to do a trip with you guys.

remember---we are a kayaking group. we love whitewater, the warmer wetter kind.
but when it becomes really white---and cold we stomp around in it.
if you are looking for a long fast outing, you might be better going with a real hiking group, we perfer a more social hike rather than for endurance run

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
