We all found out a few reasons why you should never go kayaking alone: first and foremost, it's not as much fun and you have to schlep your kayak by yourself down to the beach (thanks George and Jon! :-) ). Second, if you capsize and don't know how to self rescue, you get captured by the Gestapo and have to pay a huge ransom to the local EMS to get free. Here's another example: a 2007 Camry was towed to the shop in Torrington where I am having my deer butt imprints reversed. It's owner went kayaking by himself and NOT having anyone to help him haul his kayak, parked close to the launch--in low tide! Be it needlessly added, he returned to find flounder swimming in his glove box, bluefish cavorting in the back seat, and barnacles on the bumpers. If anyone wants a car to add to their reef in front of their oceanfront property, I believe it can be had for a most reasonable price......

George, thanks for the leadership. One of the best paddle events yet. For all: this article is about one of the islands we passed, kind of creepy yet fascinating at the same time:

How very sad people have to end up like that. Alone and helpless

I have to clean mine up a bit but not too bad considering some of my best pieces were snatched up under the watchful eyes of the police, lol. Who got pulled over on the Thruway? I swear we are more of a target with boats on top!

Hi, too bad I missed today's outing. I went to EMS and asked about rental... what is the recommended size kayak generally? 10ft ok?
    Thanks- Vivien.

Hi Cecilia, thanks for the great info. I have a small car and will have to figure out how to transport a kayak. Since we live so close to each other, if you'd like we could try kayaking on the Hudson sometime.

Hi, I am new to the group. Love to kayak but do not own one. Is there kayak rental at Orchard beach?

    June 21

    • Cecilia

Hi Vivien, I am new too. Last week was my first meet, and I love the group. For this occasion I needed to rent. There is nothing in Orchard Beach. i rented it from EMS in Scardsdale. $50 for the day. I live in Irvington. I am 5 miles from the Bronx. Hope it helps.

  • David

This is a maybe if I can transport my kayak I'll go

the parking lot is enormous, fortunatly we are at the very end, about 1/2 mile from the beach. go left as soon as you pay the parking fee and go to the end. the put-in is at the beginning of the exit road. like is said it is very far from the swimming area but very close to the put-in. the worst part is since it is on the exit road we sometimes have to dodge the city folk as they speed away.

I am wondering whether or not, on what is supposed to be a glorious sunny day, we will find that the parking lot at Orchard Beach is filled early in the morning and we can't get in. Is there some back up plan in case?

AHHH it's killing me! Right on my own backyard and I can't make it! Having a big family gathering! Have fun guys, see you at the next one!

Tomorrow I am checking into renting a kayak in Scardsdale for Sunday. I couldn't find anything closer to the Bronx. If I find a sea kayak-15 ft to rent, I am in! I had a wonderful time at the Marsh last week. More importantly the people that I met were amazing. Cecilia

Thanks Gary, unfortunately, can't make it Sun.
