Comprehensive Greenlandic Paddling Skills Workshop with Cheri Perry and Turner Wilson of Kayak Ways
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FLORIDA
November 2nd and 3rd 2013
9am-4pm with an hour for lunch
November 2nd and 3rd enjoy a weekend in Jacksonville Beach Florida dissecting the roll, as well as learning traditional kayaking skills from two of the most highly regarded greenland coaches, and rollers in the world!
Cheri and Turner are sole partners in Kayak Ways LLC, a venture based on the notion that the traditional kayaking skills of the Inuit seal catchers offer valuable lessons for the modern day recreational kayaker. For the last seven years we have been going far and wide teaching these uniquely consistent and practical kayaking skills. Explore the elegance and ease of Greenland strokes: canted, sliding, vertical, bow & stern sweeps, bow & stern rudders, sculling draws. Learn the balance brace, sculling brace, and chest scull, as well as low, high, and deep pry brace recoveries. Engage the extensive Greenland rolling repetoire: layback, forward, and sculling rolls with the paddle, norsaq, hand, and more! Cheri and Turner have mentored skinny stick skills all over the world. Cheri competed in the Greenland National Kayaking Championships in both 2004 & 2005. She is widely regarded as one of the best Greenlandstyle kayak rollers in the world. Turner is one of those rare paddlers outside of Greenland who began paddling with a traditional blade. He competed in the 2005 Greenland National Kayaking Championships in Paamiut. Cheri and Turner are also the creators of the popular instructional DVD called “This is the Roll”
Cost: $175 for one day and $325 for both days per person
Students should bring their own paddles and kayaks, we will have a good number of paddles to share and pass around, as well as a few rolling kayaks for folks to try out. There is NO list of materials, but we do suggest that folks dress for immersion. Folks will be standing in the water, watching, learning, spotting, and with it being November in North East Florida folks MUST be dressed warmly enough.
