Who can I contact to follow up when they open Peter's Creek? I live close to there and had planned on launching from there.

Would anybody be interested in Cap's on the Water afterwards? If so, bring a clean shirt or whatever would make you comfortable. It's outside and great food and about 4 miles closer to St. Augustine from Guana Park.

    • Ellen

No thanks, I will wait until Peter's Creek reopens! Have Fun in St. Augustine!

Please inform if this paddle is still on...I will be driving a distance to attend. I like the idea of doing Salt run or something if it is deemed necessary to change the location.

      Yes, yes

I'm all loaded up, I thought it would take longer to move other boat gear out of the garage but it was quick. I'm thinking the original 4:30 works very well with the tide since on the north side of the inlet, (Guana Park), the water will be against us heading south, although not very hard due to the Dam, and still with us on the way back to the Dam. Wanna go for it?

    So offically cancelled?

      Yes, unfortunately we must cancel.

I can't imagine with it being a weekend and the 4th that there is going to be a revision and "all clear" posted by a government agency. Any chance we can decamp to another locale on short notice? Salt Run down in St. Augustine? We'd be midway on the flood tide at 4:30 pm, and high tide slack water at 8:20, not too bad. Just a thought.

    July 6, 2013

    • Ellen

I'm not sure how many people will be able to make Salt run, is that in Palatka? I'd like to check it out.

      July 6, 2013

    • Patrick

No, Salt Run is basically Lighthouse Park on Anastasia Island, just across the Bridge of Lions, in St. Augustine. I usually just drive down A1A, cross over from Vilano Beach then drive through town to the Bridge of Lions, go across and take the left just past the Alligator Farm attraction on the right. There's adequate parking and a pretty easy launch area. If it's windy that can be a negative. There's also Great Guana Park a bit closer to Jacksonville on A1A. it's more protected but still tidal. We'd be paddling with the tide and coming back as we approached hightide and slack water. It's closer than Chowenwaw and has a much easier launch area.

I have to withdraw - just returned from clinic with a painful ear. If you guys decide to go somewhere else, I hope you enjoy it.

My plans have changed and, unfortunately, I can't make it tonight. I hope everyone has a beautiful evening. Enjoy it for me.

The walk is not bad to the water, bad guessers 100 feet along the grass there is a bit of a drop if you walk straight to water, more incline if you walk a bit to the right around. With the advisory, is still on? Debating on attending, I'm a bit tired

This was just posted on FCN:

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- Peter's Creek is closed to boating due to the possible collapse of a dam on man-made, private Wright's Lake in the coming days.

The Clay County Department of Public Safety alerted the National Weather Service on Friday that the head wall is failing due to heavy rainfall in the area.

No residences are in danger of flooding, but "property owners immediately adjacent to the lower portion of Peter's Creek are advised to remain away from the creek until further notice," the alert states.

The dam's owner is taking steps to keep the dam from collapsing, but "a sudden collapse and release of the dam's volume into Peter's Creek is possible over the next few days."

As of Friday afternoon, no evacuations have been issued in the area.

If Peter's Creek is closed to boaters, is this paddle still a go?

We will have to cancel if Peter's Creek is still closed tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me the distance from the Main Street Boat Ramp in Middleburg to Camp Chowenwaw? I'm thinking about doing that one-way paddle on Saturday.

    July 2, 2013

    • Tim H

You can also depart from the ramp on Old Ferry Road and paddle down to Camp Chow. Cuts about 4-5 miles off the trip.

      July 5, 2013

    • Tim H

I also recommend you do this trip early as possible. Speed boaters start burning up the creek after noon and are very annoying.

Hey guys. Is the launch point far from the parking lot? I'm wondering if I should bring my kayak wheels.

    July 5, 2013

    • Karen M M.

Good question....I don't have wheels so I have to carry my kayak.

Looking forward to it! Just paddled this area about a month ago, and did see a gator, many turtles, fish.. Really nice. Pending inclement weather, of course!
