Pack, Snack 'n Yak Out 'n Back

Have you ever wondered what the best way is to pack a kayak for an extended paddling / camping trip? Well join me this day to see how some of us do it. My friend, Greg Bailey, a veteran of kayak camping, will share his knowledge with us and offer some tips and tricks. Greg will bring his kayak and all the gear that he would usually carry for a four day / three night trip to the Everglades.  The Packing Demo will begin at 10 AM.

If you want, bring some of your gear and load your boat to see how launching & paddling a loaded boat feels on the water.

Also, bring your kayak and after the demo and QA (1+ hour) we'll have lunch in the park then we'll do a paddle along Julington Creek.

If you only want to join us for the paddle, we'll be launching after lunching sometime around 12-12:30.

The new Julington Creek Fish Camp is located next to Mandarin Park.  Some people may want to grab a bite or a drink there after the paddle.

Thanks for participating in the demonstration, David. I've found that demonstrations have a far greater impact when you burn something. ;^)

Excellent seminar! I learned a lot not just about kayaking camping but equipment as well. Several will be used when I purchase my 2nd kayak, a touring model next year. Picked up a lot of overall tips from presenter as well as audience. Great group of people, all skill levels would feel very welcome. I didn't feel any "clicks" were present, and felt the group enjoys sharing the love of nature & paddling with all. I also like the safety first guidelines evident with all group activities. Will look forward to other seminars and paddling with all!

Any one of several tips will make my next trip more enjoyable. If I can do 3 things better I'll feel like a pro! Thanks to all!

Will their be Kayas=ks for rent?

    January 16, 2014

    • Chris G.

There aren't any kayaks to rent at Mandarin Park. You could rent one somewhere else and bring it with you. Joe Crespi at First Coast Outfitters would be happy to set you up with a rental. Your other option is to try to borrow one from someone who has an extra.

I have an extra sit-on-top that I can bring for Michael, just let me know. Do you need the whole setup (pdf, whistle, paddle)?

Hardly anyone is interested in eating lunch at the Julington Creek Fish Camp. So bring a snack or sandwich for after the Packing demo and then we can get on the water sooner. Perhaps some people will want to eat there after the paddle. I anticipate paddle time to be around 12:30. The Kayak Camping demo is still scheduled to begin at 10 AM.

    Hello Chris,
I am due at an anniversary dinner at 5:00. So I don't know where the paddle is going to take place and whether I have enough time to eat with you guys, too.
    What do you think, Chris?
    Thanks

You can arrive at 10 AM and learn what and how to pack your yak for camping. You'll be able to eat lunch and paddle and still have time for your 5 PM appointment.

Is there any chance you'll be doing this again? I've been going crazy trying to figure out how to pack my kayak to go camping for a weekend where you can only go by boat. Food, water, tent, air mattress, cooler, only so much can fit.

    January 13, 2014

    • Chris G.

Of course there's a chance, especially if there is a demand for it. Let's first see how many people make it to this one.

I would have gone but already have camping reservations at Little Talbot and we're going kayaking there. Like I said earlier, so many really neat things going on here in NE Fla.

Hubby and I will def. be there for the kayak packing...not sure about lunch/paddle yet.

Just shows how many really neat outdoor opportunities exist in NE Fla. I'm already going camping and kayaking and fishing that weekend at Little Talbot State Park.

This is an excellent idea. I have never gone camping with my Kayak and I'd like to learn, so that I can do more kayaking camping., and be afraid of not bringing enough..lol thanks..
