Around Barrier Island Series (ABIS) #1 CANCELLED

  • Feb 15, 2014 · 8:00 AM
  • Alamacani Boat Ramp

Circumnavigate Little Talbot Island
THIS TRIP IS CANCELLED Due to marine forecast.

NWS Marine Forecast
400 AM EST FRI FEB[masked] SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH
SATURDAY AFTERNOON SATURDAY
WEST WINDS 20 KNOTS WITH OCCASIONAL GUSTS TO GALE
FORCE IN THE MORNING. SEAS 3 TO 5 FEET SUBSIDING TO 2 TO 3 FEET
IN THE AFTERNOON. INLAND WATERS CHOPPY. ISOLATED SHOWERS IN THE
MORNING. The rest of the 'ABIS' trips have 'alternate' dates for weather cancellations. This one doesn't, but it is a 'fun' trip (around Little Talbot) - so we'll have to reschedule for a 'calmer' time of year. Now, you all can take your honey out for a late night Valentines Day dinner, and not worry about getting up early for a paddle into Gale force winds. The "Around Barrier Island Series" trips:

1) Little Talbot Island (13 miles) (2/15 8AM)

2) Jekyll Island (18 miles) (3/8 6:30AM, WMD* : 3/22 6AM)

3) Amelia Island (32 miles) (4/5 5AM, WMD: 4/12 6AM)

3) Anastasia (AugMat) (34 miles) (5/3 6AM, WMD: 5/10 2AM)

5) MosqDeLeon (my name - MosqLag=>PonceInlet) (38 miles) (6/7 6AM, WMD: 6/21 6AM)

(with portage from ocean to Lagoon at boat ramp - end of A1a in park)

    Chris,

Looking forward to this paddle as it fits nicely with my training for the Everglades Challenge which begins on March 1. Jim Connell may be joining as well.

Much as I'd like to do this paddle, my neck/shoulder isn't in good enough shape. Y'all have a fun and safe trip!

I'll be posting details to this paddle on Tues or Weds so check your rudder lines, get your gear ready and stay tuned!

How's it going? When you say not for beginners, do you mean for endurance reasons or what? I've never been to a group paddle, but I am very interested in participating. Would I be good for ocean conditions in a SOT tarpon 140?

The distance shouldn't be a problem for a strong paddler and a SOT is much easier to recover from a capsize. I'll post a short list of minimum requirements after about a week. No need for you to change your RSVP now.

I have sit on top kayak, will this be ok,
I have been paddling for several years. Not much ocean paddling!

It should probably be an Ocean Kayak SOT or Surfski or something similar. This trip is approx fifteen miles. You need to be able to get back on your kayak if you capsize in ocean swells. What's the length and model of your kayak?
