Alapaha River S.R. 41 to the Suwannee River

  • Needs a date

  • River Crossing on S.R. 41

    S.R. 41 and S.R. 6, Jennings, FL (map)

    30.529789 -83.042061

  • This is a special trip and notification of a go date will be posted when the conditions change. The Alapaha River is unique in that the river dries up / runs into a sink and disappears. Some times for months at a time. The river starts in Georgia and continues to the Suwannen River. I have paddled the section from Jennings Florida to S.R. 41 this is a short section and again is dry at this time. When the area receives enough rain to have river flow I will be alerted and post a trip date. The river can dry up in less than a week from being paddleable so this one will be a short notice trip.

I will post pictures of the uppersection and some of the river bed when I dig them out.

I have done the paddle from Statenville to Jennings a few times when the water level is above 85 ft. at Statenville. The water is fast 4MPH+. Definitely a paddle for very experienced paddlers. Lots of swirls, eddies and your paddling near the treetops. Presently the water level is 103 ft., flood stage is 101 ft. I would love to paddle this tomorrow, but haven't found anyone to go with. All the river water levels are higher than normal, so there is some great paddling to be had. http://www.srwmd.state.fl.us/realtimeriverlevels/realtimeriverlevels.aspx

Lets try this: I am currently on special assignment and will not return to the Northeast Florida area until sometime late next week. I have meetings on Saturday, 7 September so if there is water...I will be checking it when I return. Lest try for Sunday, 8 August 2013.

    • Karen M M.

I would be game for then, Bruce, but unfortunately I have company down from Buffalo and she will not be leaving until the 11th and she doesn't kayak. But if that works the majority, then by all means go for it! :)

With all the rain we have had, has it been enough to set a date for this paddle before cold weather sets in?

    August 26, 2013

  • Karen M M.

Hmmmmm...will we ever get to do this paddle?? LOL

    June 16, 2013

  • Bruce

I will be out there in the next couple of days and check...it has to rain in the right places for that river to get water in it.

Ok, there HAS to be water in this are after all the rain we just had!!!!!

Checked out the satellite map and sure looks like sand to me. Then again, don't know when the google satellite map pic was taken. So looking forward to this trip...seems like it should be beautiful!! I can also do this one during the week!!

  • Bruce

There is no waiting list, I am just waiting on the water level to come up so it is not a dry sand trail and a river once more. I'll be checking it next week.

The biggest issue with this trip is making sure there is water.in the river. While we had a wet summer the lower leg of the river it has continued to be dry. I am looking forward to running this section of river but we need some rain. Everyone who as said they want to participate in this trip will be notified as soon as I am sure we can complete the trip safely.

    June 27, 2012

  • Linda

Bruce, looks like "Deby" did a great job on adding water. any thoughts.

    June 27, 2012

  • Bruce

Well I checked the river out this afternoon. It appears that a trpoical storm is not enough water to even get the river bed wet. The river looked like a dirt road. I will be keeping an eye on the water levels and hopefully we will get enough rain this year to check out this very unique river.

    May 31, 2012

  • Trish

I'll say yes depending on the day...

    May 29, 2012

  • Bruce

With the possibility of a lot of rain in the south Georgia, north Florida area in the next few days there may be a possibility of the river having water in it. I will be checking the river later this week. In the meantime I hope everyone will weather the storm well.

This river is fun when the water level is above 85 feet in Statenviile, Ga. Current is 4 + mph. Launch at the boat ramp on SR 94 in Statenville and take out in Jennings at CR 150.

Paddling underground rivers. Now THAT'S exciting!

    May 9, 2012

  • Bruce

Linda: sorry about the delay in the reply, I was out of town on assignment. The trip is approximately 11 miles long. There is still no water in the river, it is a long sand trail. As soon as I know there is water I will announce the trip date.
