Silver River Paddle

//UPDATE 7/19/12//

camping - if anyone is interested in camping, the park has it's own campsites.

//////////////

This is going to be a beautiful trip up and down the Silver River. We will be meeting at Ray Wayside Boat Basin at 9:30 am, and unload all of boats and gear, and hopefully be on the water by 10:00am.

At the junction of I-75 and SR 40 (exit 352, old #69) in Ocala, turn east (right) on SR 40 and go 9 miles to the Silver Springs attraction. Continue past the theme park on SR 40 for 3 miles to Ray Wayside Park. The park is 1/4 mile west of Delks Bluff Bridge. A canoe launch is located at the far end of the park just past the boat ramps.

This trip is open to all skill level, but please be advised that we will be paddling 5 miles up stream against the current (it's not that strong) 3mph, and then 5miles down stream with the current (nice and easy).

We will be taking out in the same place we are putting in. The trip up stream is a little strenuous, but well worth it! it is about a 5-to-6-hour trip. There will be a few different places before getting to Silver Springs where we can stop for lunch on the way back. We might even be able to take a dip in the beautiful crystal clear water.

Silver Springs is full of animal life, from Monkeys to alligators, and everything in between, this is sure to be a great trip! Since there are alligators in this river, we will need to be careful if we decide to go for a dip:)

Things to bring:-Lots of water

-Snack -Lunch

-Change of clothes

-bug spray

-Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen

    I want to mention that this was a 14 mile round trip paddle! I want to thank everyone that helped me out getting everyone in the water and getting the groups off and moving. I could not have done this without you. I hope everyone had as good of time as i did! It was nice to stop along the way for a rest and lunch, since you can't get out the park area. i will say that it was not the state park, that is further up the river, that is a private run park. I would like to see what the run looks like from the state park down to there though. I'm glad people got to see the monkeys!!

Happy Monkey Viewing & bird sanctuary seeing & a few gator gatherings & I'm just listing all the stuff I'm going to miss because I'm a bitter party of one!!!

    Anybody happen to have a two-person kayak or two singles available for this paddle?

    I am new to this and don't have any equipment, but I would love to give this trip a try... and possibly bring a friend along.

    August 16, 2012

    • Vence H.

      Probably too last-minute for me to make this happen this time around.

      August 16, 2012

    • Vence H.

      Actually, no friend tagging along, so I would only need 1 single.

      August 16, 2012

  • Vence H.

    No, I just have a convertible.
    Thanks for the offer...
    I think I may be getting in on this too late to make it happen.

    Is anyone planning on camping? I may camp Saturday night, not sure. Is there a caravan of cars following or are some already camping down there? I have never been down there and this will be a new trip. Has anyone camped there and is there a swimming area?

    I went last year and got out at the ropes where I climbed up, grabbed on and swung out over the water and then let go. Sounds like no big deal, but it was my first time to do such a thing and was very FUN!!!! Had to do again and again! Have fun everyone!

    Wayne - here's how the renting works - call First Coast Outfitters and speak to Joe 502-7733. arrange for which boat and payment with him. Ralph will pick it up and return it. all you need to do is show up! Let me know when the date gets closer, so I can give Joe a heads up, and Ralph so he knows to go and get it! looking forward to this paddle!!
