Beyond the Breakers Paddle Challenge

The Florida State Surf Championships is proud to present the inaugural “Beyond the Breakers Paddle Challenge” hosted by First Coast Outfitters, benefitting North Florida Land Trust. Come out and participate in what is sure to be one of Florida’s most competitive off-shore kayak, surf ski and paddleboard races while also supporting a great cause like land preservation. Racers have the opportunity of winning thousands of dollars in prizes from many of great sponsors as well as bragging rights!

This exciting competition will be broken up into several heats and will begin with a shore line start just north of the Jacksonville Beach Pier.  On race day we will have a Captain’s meeting to go over the specifics of the course prior to the race start time.

For the kayakers and surf ski paddlers we have a 6-mile course laid out starting North of the Jax Beach Pier, with the course turning north just beyond the break, followed by a sprint heading north. The second turn will be at One Ocean where the kayaker and surf ski paddlers will then head east towards the Atlantic in sight of the third turning marker before making a southerly turn which will then align the paddler in the right conditions for a down wind run heading directly for the Jacksonville Beach Pier. Once in sight of the Pier the paddlers will need to round the last marker located just beyond the first break line. After this turn it is a straight shot to shore where every paddler and their boat will be escorted by a volunteer to the running finish line.

Paddleboarders will have a 3-mile course which will have a similar start heading straight through the breakers making a northerly turn just beyond the breakers at the first marker. They will then sprint to the second “One Ocean” marker. Once the paddleboarders have made this second turn they will head back to the pier in a sprint, and make the final turn at the marker located just beyond the breakers. The paddleboarder will then head directly to shore where they will have volunteers there waiting to help escort them across the finish line.

All racers will be micro chipped and will be required to cross the finish line in order to have their time recorded to place the paddler. The microchips allow us to time the paddler to tenths of a second.
