Crystal River - Swim with the Manatees 1

  • December 1, 2012 · 10:00 AM
  • Hunter Springs Park

It's that time of year, no not the holidays, but MANATEE time!!

Things you will need:

Kayak, paddle, pdf

Wet Suit – can be rented from Diver Supply on St. Johns Bluff Road.

You might want booties and gloves also.

Mask, snorkel and fins

Water and snacks

Water camera

We will meet at the park at 10:00 am.  And launch at 10:30 am.  There are rules that are governing being around the manatees which I will go over at 10:00 am, before we launch.  This paddle is wonderful, and the manatees are friendly!  We always have fun and leave with memories that last.

After the paddle, we usually head over to a restaurant Crackers and have some really good food.

I will update this in the next few weeks with hotel information and more on the wet suit rentals.

It was a good trip. The paddle / swim was fun and the camp fire gathering was equally enjoyable. I'm hoping the Sunday Rainbow folks post some picutures from there. My camper had some "issues" on the way back. Things got a little confused during the clean up. I'll post some pictures from Crystal River paddle and coots on Lake Rouseau when I find the camera.

FYI- anyone who wants an outstanding breakfast at a local joint, go to AJ's on US 19 + NE 3rd st one mile from Hunter Springs launch. Across parking lot from Walgreens. It inexpensive and beats the heck outta Denny's. Come on over. [masked]

Friday Pot Luck Dinner invite at Rainbow Spings Campground

Hi everyone - am in group 2 but wanted to extend the invitation to this group as well.
We're camping out with Charles at #60 at Rainbow Springs. I am thinking I'll get there about 5-6ish.
Foodwise, I am planning to bring stuff that cooks over a campfire - turkey/chicken sausages, s'mores. I will also whip up some stuff that can travel in the cooler - picnicky type things (though I am a foody so I can say my stuff tends to be very tasty :-). And of course, wine. Also thinking of hot cider with rum (optional) since its likely to be chilly. Nothing formal - just come on by whenever for meet and greet. There will be plenty so if you can't get food together, don't worry about it. Just bring whatever you like to drink. Everyone welcome.

    • alan

I am trying to get there as soon as possible because I want to take the opportunity to explore that park as well, I have not been there and I think this is a place I will go to more often, so I will try to be there by 15:00 hrs.

      November 29, 2012

    • alan

I am really fine, I don't need anything in terms of food or supplies. About the diver's stuff I had no idea we needed anything other than a mask and snorkel to swim there. If you get there before me just go to site #23 and set up your tent however you want, I am sure there is plenty of room for more than 2 tents.

      November 29, 2012

  • alan

Hey Kris, is there anything you would like me to bring? I am bringing some red wine, but let me know if you want me bring some type of food also.
    Alan

    November 28, 2012

Me so sorry! I guess I will try to plea my case of a glass of red, just to better my chances of pardon.

Linda My friend will take a boat tour at 10am. Then I will go kayaking with you the gang. Okay. Just wonder how far from there to our boat launch? Thanks.

    November 27, 2012

    • Linda

did she make reservations? she'll need to be there early also. the play that video. I can send you the written version. it's a bit long so I'll email it to you.

      November 27, 2012

    • ruby

Linda yes I called for a reservation for her. Yes she has to be there at 9:30am. Then I will zoom to our boat launch. Thanks for the written version you will email to me. Appreciate your thought. Do look forward to it. Last year i went there. So adorable that the manatee "hugged" under my kayak.

      November 27, 2012

  • David

I'm bringing my dive flag (from Scalloping) and short staff (PVC pipe) to fly from a rod holder on my yak. It would be good if others brought some too. I believe this will qualify as "rivers inlets....." stay within 100ft of your flag bearing vessel. Enforcement depends upon a lot of factors. Good to at least attempt to comply. Following link has the rule look under "Diver Down Flag" http://myfwc.com/boating/regulations/#nogo

    1 · November 27, 2012

    • Linda

good idea. but from past experience, there's more people in the water than boats at the spring!

      November 27, 2012

  • Will S.

Jim Connell and I will host a fireside gathering on Satruday night. Come join us after the sun goes down at Rainbow River SP Camp Sites #57 & 58. Bring a lawn chair, a libation, and your own S'mores fixings as we sit around and re-count the days adventure.

    November 27, 2012

  • Linda

I am really excited about this weekend. I know we are a large group, but don't let that deter anyone. there's more than enough room at the spring and water way to the spring. and plenty of manatees! If anyone has a waterproof camera, bring it! you never know what's gona happen in the water! I'll have mine, but I can't be everywhere, although I try.

    November 27, 2012

  • Linda

sorry to hear that Ruby. Hope you can still make it. if not, we will do the trip again in late February. kind of a "farewell to the manatees for the season!"

    November 27, 2012

  • ruby

Linda Thanks for the info on tour and dive. I look forward to seeing you all there but if something has come up, I may not be able to go. So don't wait for me.

I'm bowing out, WAY to many people to swim with the mantees.
The invasion of people Makes me sad for the mantees. :(

    November 26, 2012

    • Andrea

there will be even more people there than just the 50 people from our two groups. There are pontoon boat tours and other kayakers. you're right, Steve, it is crowded and seems like the manatees would be annoyed. but there's a roped-off area for them to escape the people when they want to.

      1 · November 26, 2012

    • Linda

i inend on repeating this trip again in late February/early March also.

excellent video explaining "manatee manners" and how to have a great experience with the manatees without harming them. Thanks, Linda, for sharing the link.

Is anyone camping the night before? If yes, where is a good place for camping?
    Thank you!

I have opened this up to include 20 more people. Chris has taken 20 in a seperate group. It was our intent that the waiting list be moved to his posting. as of this morning, I noticed that didn't happen. So, I am asking that any other organizers that are attending help out.

Dave was kind enough to do some looking and found the following camp sites

Here is the most likely candidate for a camp ground. They have RV spots and tent spots. Milage is less than ten from the park launch. Lake is part of the cross florida barge canal......think Rodman like. http://www.lakerousseaurvpark.com/ Most of the groups have stayed or planned on camping at Raimbow River State Park, 20 miles, and doing the rainbow river on Sunday. Either can be good. http://www.floridastateparks.org/rainbowsprings/

    October 27, 2012

  • Linda

I've checked on Hotels. there are a few in the area that are around $50 per night. Econo Lodge and Days Inn. If you book from Hotels.com. I am going to wait till the week before to book the room. I did not find any campsites in Crystal River or Fort White. Still looking!

    October 25, 2012

  • Linda

Wow, I'm glad that we are having such a positive response to this trip! Just hope the Manatees cooperate!

I just moved to the Fairfax Manor area near the river and need someone to show me nearby places for paddling by myself. Not familiar with the river here and the other waterways. If can help and are willing I am free most of the time to hit the water and paddle.
