Tom. I was sure there'd be a commemorative plaque to honor my list place showing.

Actually it was a good race challenge. Especially since I'm now Twelve years younger than I was the day before the race. Must have been a time continum thing. What a race. Good thing it was just the age that changed.

They apparently did not know I crossed the finish line, either. My bib number is not listed. THAT"S why I didn't get a prize! Yeah, that's it - timer malfunction! There's photographic evidence, however.

Well, I thought I did pretty well at just under 52 minutes (my GPS data)

Just got a chance to look at the results. I haven't been 22 yrs old for a while, not sure if I'm even in the right class. My buddy, who whipped my butt time wise isn't even listed, but the fact that I did indeed come in last is verified. Anyone else have issues with their placement in the results.

Great video and pics Mike. Really had a Blast out there! My only downfall was leaving my wide bream, (old man) yak hat in the car. Thus, I am currently in possession of the reddest neck in our fair state. A HUGE pat on the back to Joe and his team for putting on another top shelf event!

I was very happy to see the coverage in the T-U today, even though I wasn't mentioned! I thought I made a heroic effort, nonetheless. The overall festival was an improvement over last year also. Happy to see that. I hope it contiues to grow.

Fantastic day, tough paddling on the outbound leg, but that's the "Challenge" part, right? Ditto about the results - when can we see them?

    Thanks to all.

I had an awesome time and hope to be there next year. When and where will the results be posted?

Awesome day. Perfect weather. Good people. Fun time. Incredible music.

Can't make it! Hosting a music party that day. Come on by after the Eco Fest!

I'll be glad to help people after they cross the finish line, cause I'm gonna GET THERE FIRST! (Reclaiming my man card, David!)

    2 · April 25, 2013

  • HANK L.

Sounds like fun and will get me off my butt. Is there a Super Senor division for really old fogies? I hate to compete with those kids that are only 50 or so... In the first place I'm not there to race, look with the banner, "I CAME TO PARTY".

    1 · April 21, 2013

    • Tom L.

The more of us, the better! I do wish they would move that line to 60, though. Remember - we're not competing, we're participating!

"......Remember - we're not competing, we're participating!......." Careful they'll make you turn in your man card for statements like that.

I signed up for the three mile, master class. Look for me in the middle.

The flow will not be at its greatest and it is not a remarkably high tide, so that's good. And it's a lot better coming in with the tide on the second half!

Tom.......just like yesterday. Then too there was a 10-15 mph east wind we likely won't have at noonish. But I prevailed, others can too. Still quite satisfing to finish. The promise of a cold drink and the words of encouragement from the crowd will do wonders for the trip back.

We're about two weeks out. If you haven't signed up to paddle/SUP/canoe yet, you should. This is a great race for all kayakers, just to get out and enjoy the St. Johns River and show our community how important the river is to each of us.

And, the festival is free, there will be beer, live music, food trucks, and many vendors, along with several workshops to help you paddle better.

I believe the 2X Olympian from Seattle has a workshop on Friday!!!

And, there's the film festival Friday night benefitting Riverkeeper at MOSH!!!!! DON'T MISS THIS EVENT!!! IT'S FOR YOU!!!

Just to be sure - RSVPing here does not sign you up for the race event. To do that, follow the link above. If you are just RSVPing for attending the festival - terrific! I hope to see you there.

Looking forward to volunteering again this year.

What do you think we should do to identify The Jacksonville Kayaking Meetup Group members to the crowd? Especially for the boats in the race but also the members attending the festival? Special shirt, cap or a sticker for the boat?

    March 14, 2013

    • Joe C.

Hey Tom, I think it would be great to have the meetup represented at the RCC fest!! Please feel free to take the lead on representing our crew!!

      March 14, 2013

    • Tom L.

Well, I walked into that one, didn't I? Do we have any sort of working logo - something that would identify us? And how many of the 30 attendees are actually entered in the race?

      March 20, 2013

  • Tom L.

I am signed up for the race! I can't see a list of participants on the event site, so I'd be interested to hear from other members if you are in the race.

I apddled the 3-mile course in the event last year in a 13' Easky Venture. There were a variety of "non-competitive" craft and it was a lot of fun. I hope we get a bigger turnout of weekenders this year.

    2 · February 2, 2013

    • John

That's the group I want to be in, the 'non-competitive" class. I don't care if I come in last, I just didn't want people to wonder why I was out there in my 15' Necky Zoar with a bunch of guys in fiberglass racing boats. This sounds like a great time, my plan is to be there-well, I was going to to hell or high water, but since I have a kayak, the high water part doesn't really stop me.

      2 · February 2, 2013

    • Tom L.

On the event page, there is a link to a picture gallery, and the fourth photo is the recreational class at the start. Lots of boats not up the the class of a Zoar, too. I placed second in my class (3 mile, recreational, masters (read - 50 and over)) I hope I do worse this year. Meaning I hope there are a lot more people in the event. I hope the turnout is such that they have to rethink the parking situation for the third year...

Are there different classes for the races at this festival. The people in the picture all look high speed low drag. I don't really care about winning, neither my kayak nor me are built for speed, but it at least needs to be fun.

    January 28, 2013

    • Joe C.

Hey John, River City Challenge is open to all kayaks ;) You would be competing people in your own class which is decided by gender/age/vessel..kinda like nascar! Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.

      1 · January 29, 2013

Thanks for the info. I need the slow and steady class!
