Humanist Study Group

This group is devoted to the study of humanism and related topics including the sources of human ethics and morality, how the brain works, anthropology and sociology.  At this meeting, the group will begin reading and discussing Greta Christina's new book Why are You Atheists So Angry?  99 Things that Piss Off the Godless.  We will try to get though the Introduction and the first two chapters (thru page 56).  These two chapters include her list of 99 problems she has with religion and expected responses from the religious as to her concerns.  These are all issues relevant to humanists of the atheist or secular persuasion.

We meet at a private residence in an apartment complex, so do not park in spaces with numbers on then. Best parking, is the parking row near the tennis courts, but any parking space not numbered will work.  The apartment is located off of a sidewalk behind the southern tier of buildings.

This is a potluck, so bring some food, snacks or drinks to share!

If you would like to suggest a topic or be put on an email distribution list and from time to time receive resource materials and reminders, send an email request to [masked] - PLEASE SPECIFY that you want on the Humanist Study Group list!

Also, note that many participants in this group do not reserve through this Meetup site.  We generally have a pretty good group, so do not be dissuaded from attending if only a few have signed up here!

I am looking for an intellectual group who want to talk about topics and issues without ranting and without trying to give a lecture. I teach critical thinking and know that being open, questioning, and never sure you are completely correct is the method for an engaging conversation. Am I looking into the right group? Thanks, sybil

And how would you feel if it weren't the perfect group for you?

No Rob: Many people including Tom and Fred make comments that challenge my POV. But they say them well. You are in a class of your own with classless, stupid remarks. And I am not going to waste my time on them anymore. Don

      Ied as stupid. The hypocrisy.

Rob please, the hypocrisy that you think you believe in a moral God is what.

Greta Christina is a Lebanese. You want us to follow the morals (or lack thereof) of a Lebanese?

Ironic that her last name is Christina, which is derived from Christ, the one person you all should be listening to instead.

You have to make a note for people not to park in assigned spots? I thought you atheists were supposed to be smart...

Morals come from god. Simple and elegant. Atheists are naturally immoral.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
