West Bottoms

Hello everyone it is time to dust off your sensors, pop in a SD card, charge your battery and screw in a lens.

We are meeting at historic West Bottoms for first Saturday's. The West Bottoms is an industrial area immediately to the west of downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The area is one of the oldest areas in the city.

In the past I have even gone inside a few of the antique shop and have been allowed to photograph. PLEASE be very respectful to the establishment and the shoppers while in the shops. I would hate to be banned because we didn't behave ourselves.

Please plan on getting there a little early since parking will be in short supply (as usual). In case you need to reach me my phone number is[masked]-0649.

Meeting at 11th & Santa Fe -

As usual, I had a great time but didn't see too many from the group...perhaps if I actually got there on time :)
I think that would be an awesome to go again later in the year!

Sounds like I missed a good time. Moses, I appreciate your comment concerning the photog with a bad knee. If it was just a matter of getting out of the car and driving to the next scene, I would have attempted it. But in my case I'd have to unload my walker from the trunk, dodge potholes and steps. By the time I made it to the location I'm too tired to capture the image then repeat the trek back to car and load up. Just being my pragmatic self. Anybody here interested in table top photography? I've been playing with the idea creating scenes with green screen background. Think I'll visit Hobby Lobby for some ideas this week. BTW... great photos from
Saturday. This group has some real impressive talent. Hope I can join the next outing/ project.

I consider myself more of a portrait photographer so today was a bit out of my comfort zone, but I learned a lot and I'm so glad I went. Can't wait for the next one. :)

    April 4, 2014

  • moses r.

I'm looking forward to this meetup! There are lots of cool, old buildings, alleys and stuff in general to shoot down there.

I'm thinking digital backgrounds for my green screen. Hopefully, it won't be too crowded to get clean shots.

      1 · April 4, 2014

I was wondering what the protocol for children is. My 11 yo is expressing interest in shooting and I would like to bring him along.

Lol. My daughter (13) claims to want to go as well. We'll see if that holds up when she realizes it requires waking up early on Saturday.

So glad we are doing this again. Love to photograph the area down there and sounds like we will have a great big group! Lots of fun!

    2 · April 4, 2014

  • Lee H.

I just did a drive through of the area. Fascinating for the photojournalist in me! But I'm afraid it's a bit rough for my current situation. I'm going to have to withdraw. If I can get some strength built up in my legs this summer I join the next shoot there. But for now I'd be a real burden to the everyone else. So have fun and I'll keep an eye out for a shoot I can join in.

    • moses r.

We had a guy 2 years ago with a bad knee that drove around got out walk a little bit took pictures. Hopped in his car drove a bit more and did it again. He was able to get to most of the streets and alleys.

As always these meetups tend to be learning sessions too. So allow me to lay down some guidelines: 1. If you are a newbie please ask questions
    2. If you are knowledgeable please answer questions
    3. If you fall in between… do both!

      Great rules to live by!

      2 · April 3, 2014

  • Lee H.

Frank, thanks for the heads up. I'll probably be lagging behind the group some. I don't want to ruin any one's fun. My creative eye isn't as good as it once was.

    April 2, 2014

    • moses r.

Like Ronald said come and join us. Take your time and have fun.

      1 · April 3, 2014

    • moses r.

By the way we never stay together as a group, too many things to shoot and we each have our own way of looking at things. At the most we clump in 2-4 in a group. We have 67 signed up… I don't think we could ever stay together even if we wanted o.

      1 · April 3, 2014

  • Lee H.

I'll need to use a walker. My legs are bad and if I kneel I'll need it to rise again. Are there places where this will be a problem? Looking forward to meeting you all. This will be my first shoot with you.

    April 2, 2014

    • Ronald E B.

Walking the streets should not be a problem, but some stores do have stairs

      April 2, 2014

    • Frank V.

Lee, you should just plan on taking your time with getting around. Some of the area streets are a bit rough but passable.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I'll bring a cane too, or stay outside in the sun. I hate the limitations imposed by age, among other things.
