KU's Excellent European Motorradtour 2014

PARTICIPATING RIDERS - PLEASE SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM FOR IMPORTANT UPDATES!

Kathy and Dave are planning a return visit to ride the Alps again in summer 2014 and this time we hope to also venture into the Italian Dolomites and conquer Stelvio Pass. We are happy to share this trip with a few of our new friends from Meetup so if you have been on the fence about taking an international ride, this may just be your chance!

Building from our successful DIY trip plan from 2011 we will fly to Munich, Germany and spend a week riding south through Bavaria into Austria, Italy, and Switzerland.  Details of the trip and the route will be developed over the winter. Riders are welcome to nominate points of interest for inclusion. Part of this adventure will be to leave some things unplanned and spontaneous so that we can explore and adapt to changing weather conditions.

Expected budget for this trip is about $3000-3500./pp, assuming 1 bike/1 rider, using your own gear and no mishaps.

$1600. - round trip airfare to Munich (from DC or PHL)

$  600. - hotel x 8 nights

$ 500-1000. - motorcycle rental x 1 week (may be more or less depending on type of motorcycle chosen)

$  400. - meals

We are planning to host a show and tell over the winter(Jan/Feb) for interested riders, with photos and tips learned from two prior DIY European motorcycle trips. If you have never been to this area of the world, the scenery is breathtaking. There are delightful surprises around every corner. The food is amazing. The people are friendly, especially other bikers!

Valid passport, proof of motorcycle licensure and credit card will be required. Insurance is available however be advised the deductibles are about $1500. and damage deposits are required up front...so it is best not to have a mishap at all!

If you join us on this trip you will learn why Kathy's nickname is "Expat2b"....riding in Bavaria and the Tyrol region is an unforgettable experience and you won't want to leave!

March 13 - EVENT UPDATE:  A riders' meeting and german pot luck dinner has been scheduled for Sunday March 23 in Washington DC (Time: 5pm). Now is the time to get serious about reserving your bike rental and transatlantic flights.  Please see the comments section here for suggested bike rental agencies. If you need assistance communicating with them to make your reservation, please contact me. We are working out the final hotel details now and will provide the full itinerary with booking instructions at rider's meeting.

-------------------

Jan 26 - EVENT UPDATE: Route details are shaping up nicely and should be finalized by our presentation at Rip's on Feb 3.

This is going to be an epic trip! Event dates have also been updated as previously noted. Since group members will likely be flying to Munich from different airports in the US, we will plan meet in Munich at the Hotel Galleria Plinganserstraße 142, Munich (pending all riders' advance confirmation). If you are not comfortable getting to the hotel from the airport alone, please contact me and we can arrange to meet a the Munich airport. The hotel is about a 1 hour train ride from the airport.

The ride will run from Saturday 21 Jun - Saturday 28 June. Participants are strongly advised to plan to arrive in Germany at least 1 full day prior to the ride to adjust to the time zone before we begin our journey.  Transatlantic flights from the US to Germany are overnight flights so this means at minimum departing the US on Thursday for arrival on Friday morning.

A detailed itinerary is being prepared with suggested rental and hotel contact information, as well as a handy checklist to track all the necessary bookings.  Before booking your international flights, each rider should contact the bike rental company to be sure a suitable bike is available for the actual ride dates, which will be Sat 21 June - Sat 28 June 2014 (total rental 1 week).

Stay tuned for more info!

What an amazing week! We saw some beautiful countryside, ate delicious food and drank delicious beer, rode alpine coasters, met my german friends and hiked a crevasse, drank fresh alpine milk and petted the cows, watched surfing in the middle of a major city, went shopping and rode some of the best twisties in the world! The weather cooperated we had only a couple of rain showers and everyone made it through without incident. Please enjoy the photos and be inspired to join us on an international biking adventure next time!

    Attention Riders:

I just received a special weekly rate/price offer from Thomas Volkl of Moto-Volkl He said we can rent bikes for 7 days and he will only charge us for 5 days! Last time we rented from him, he also let us return at the end of the day late :) This is a very nice family-run business.

Check out the bike list here and remember the prices are in EUROS! If you are interested in any of these bikes, let me know and I can check availability or you can email him (just be prepared to use Google Translate)

All, FYI - NOW is the time to reserve your bikes and airline tickets for June! I suggest securing your bike reservation first and then the airline ticket because the bike rental dates are likely to be less flexible and you can't go wrong if you need a couple extra days in Munich! I have located the following bikes available June 21 - June 28:

Available from moto-volkl.de (a bit far from the hotel, but we rented from them last time - very friendly and reasonable; don't speak much english) Yamaha FZ1
    Suzuki Gladius 650
    Suzuki GSXR 750
    Suzuki VStrom 1000, new model

Available from AllRoundRent.de (close to hotel; friendly, english speaking staff): 1 BMW F 800 GS
    4 BMW R 1200 GS Lc 125 hp
    3 BMW R 1200 GS 110 hp
    1 BMW F 650 GS 2 cyl 71 hp
    1 BMW G 650 GS one cyl 50 hp
    1 BMW F 800 R
1 Honda Deauville NT 700 VA
1 Honda CB[masked] hp no ABS
2 Honda CB[masked] hp no ABS
    5 BMW R 1200 RT 110 hp
    2 BMW R 1200 RT Lc 125 hp
    2 BMW R 1200 ST
    1 BMW F 800 S
    1 BMW F 800 ST

Still checking on Honda CTX rentals; not looking too promising as the bikes are not widely distributed in Europe yet and they are for sale, not rental. CanAm Spyder rentals are possible; checking for rentals near Munich.

Hello riders, I am presently in a dialogue with Germany working to locate suitable bikes for Dave & myself - want to get this confirmed before we purchase our air tickets. If you would like a particular model bike and want me to find a dealer while I am working on this, please reply ASAP with the model(s) of bike you will consider for this trip, or other requirements (i.e. seat height, cruiser or sport tourer, etc. ) Thanks

My baby brother Brian will be joining us. :) He's a lapsed rider who is returning to the sport this spring.

Here is a video of Stelvio Pass in late June. There will be snow.

    Kathy,
The motorcycle company wrote me back. They will receive an honda CTX 700 this year (yah the exact same bike I have), but they cannot guarantee that it will be their by June. Their second suggestion, given my height and clutching ability, is a 28 hp scooter. I'm going to take the fact that they plan to get the exact bike I have, as a SIGN that they will get the bike in time for your trip. I will buy my plane tix around April, if they have a good feeling.

    February 4, 2014

    • Kathy L

Dee, if the one rental company doesn't have the bike you are looking for, it may be possible to rent from another dealer. I did a quick google search 'motorcycle rental Munich' and found at least 3 others.

I couldn't make it yesterday. Will there be another show/tell?

    February 4, 2014

    • Kathy L

George I would be happy to do it again. I know some others who live west of DC were not able to make it due to the snow. Would a weekend be easier for you?

      February 4, 2014

  • Kathy L

Hello everyone - please note I the show/tell presentation/planning meeting is set for Monday evening Feb 3, 7pm at Rip's Restaurant in Bowie, MD. If that is not a good night for you please let me know ASAP and suggest a few alternate dates. Also please let me know if you have commited/booked your flight or bike yet or vacation time off yet. If everyone is still flexible with dates, we have a very good friend from across the pond who might like to meetup with us during the trip somewhere in Italy or Austria, but we would need to move the trip up a week earlier. Please let me know if this presents any problem.

This is on my bucket list. I've been checking out http://www.edelweissbike.com/ European tours, but your DIY option with KU is the priceless. Count me in. I will book a direct flight from Dulles. The flight arrives in Munich at 8 am or 12:45 pm on the 29th. What time will you arrive? Do you have a website for the bike rental?

    1 · November 10, 2013

    • Dee

Thanks for the information on the different bike models. A international driver's license was required the last time I was in Europe. It is a translation of your American license. I bought mine from the AAA office. https://midatlantic.aa...

Article on currency conversion between euros and US dollars: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/13/AR2010051305134.html

    November 10, 2013

    • Tammy R.

Hi Kathy, I just read the currency conversion article and found it to be quite interesting. So how do you and Dave typically handle it?

      November 13, 2013

    • Kathy L

We just hit the ATM at Munich airport and then at any other ATM (called 'Geldautomat' in German) as needed to get euros. They are conveniently located in every town. The cash is debited at the daily exchange rate and I think there is a nominal fee.

      November 13, 2013

  • Tammy R.

Hmmmm Kathy....I checked out the bike rental site and I only see a few bikes that are low enough for me. I need one with a seat height that's 26.6" or lower (I have a 30" inseam). I see in an earlier post that you said a sport tourer is a good bike for the mountains, but will a cruiser handle well enough?

    November 11, 2013

    • Kathy L

Allright, apparently cruisers are no problem! Here is a whole tour of Harleys riding the Grossglockner...another favorite biker road with tight curves (so popular it is a toll road) http://www.youtube.co...

    November 10, 2013

Completely understand ~ the air fare from US to Europe in July is a killer, but there is risk of snow and road closures from Sept through June and August is when everyone in Europe takes their holidays. The guided tours cost from $4500 - 6000 so we found the DIY trip saves at least $1000. Hoping this brings it into range for some.

      November 10, 2013

  • Tammy R.

Wow! I would LOVE to do this trip. I don't know if I can pull the money together, but I'm sure going to try!
