Sundial Peak

  • July 21, 2012 · 6:30 AM

Basic climb students graduates.  This is a one day rock climb.  Start at 6-6:30am from the Royal Basin trailhead.  Hike up 7.3 Miles to Upper Surprise Basin and ascend the to the right up Sundial Peak.  Crampons and Ice Axes are required along with 10 essentials and climbing harness and equipment.  This is a rigorous long day but fun. Can be either class 3 or 5 which ever way we do the summit block.  Have not climbed this but think it should be fairly direct and at least a fun outing.

We turned right instead of left and ran into an impossible 5 class route. The route 4 description was to the point. We left the trail head at 7am turned around at 2:30pm and returned to the trail head at about 8pm. If you know where you are going it would have worked but we took the wrong turn. If we had gone to the left, we would have summited and returned at about 11pm. Everyone was wonderful and in good shape. What a good group. Better to take an overnight and start summit day early from camp. Typical rotten rock but with snow in Surprise Basin made approach easier. Crampons are good but snow was just soft enough to not require them. Sundial is an interesting peak. Straight up from Shelter Rock. What a day.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
