Dear Kevin et al.,

Looking over my message I can’t for the life of me see what criticism you are referring to. Sorry if you took offense. I asked for a clarification on the purpose and goals of the group, and mentioned I have little interest in a group focusing primarily on socializing. That was a simple statement of fact, not a criticism. (I MAY tend to be a little critical of VSET, for reasons I’ll not bother going into, but that has nothing to do with KnoxVegans). Beyond that, without knowing exactly what critical feedback you have in mind, I can’t respond.

I think I did offer a positive suggestion, specifically to invite the artist I mentioned, Ashton Ludden to talk about her art provoking deep contemplation about animals as food. There are many sites online featuring her work; here is one: http://inkteraction.ning.com/profile/AshtonLudden. I don’t know this artist personally and have no assocition with her other than our mutual interest in animal issues and my (now) owning one of her prints.

I’ve no shortage of postive suggestions, but it was pointless to propose them until I determined whether this group would have any interest in them. Another, one that I long ago suggested to VSET, is to invite Howard Lyman. He has told me twice in person that he’d love to come to Knoxville and speak; his requirements are quite modest. And so on.

Any effort at bringing the vegan message to a broader Knoxville audience would be of considerable interest to me.

Yours truly,
John Mayer

John,
This group started out with a largely social and supportive function for
vegans. That is still one of its main purposes, and it is something that is very
much needed and wanted. Along the way, a significant number of friends and
spouses of group members have "converted" to veganism after having had positive
experiences in our gatherings. So - indirectly but significantly the group is
creating and supporting new vegans. The group has grown steadily and we are
starting to get large enough to consider sponsoring speakers and educational
events - both for our members and for the wider public. VSET is very
interested in partnering with us on this. Certainly if you have specific
ideas for things that you would like to source/organize/create, I
would think the group would be very supportive. There is quite a lot of interest
in outreach and education to the public within the group.

Your comments and feedback tend to be very critical. Pure criticism without
positive suggestions is neither helpful nor supportive.
Cordially,
Kevin Meyer

Sorry my
schedule doesn’t match up with your events. But vegan socializing isn’t a very
great interest of mine anyhow. Is there any interest in the group in any sort
of outreach to persuade others of the vantages of a plant-based diet, or in
learning more about the facts relating to such a diet vs. the common
misconceptions in order to make such outreach more effective? Or is that sort
of thing simply not what this group is about? At this year’s Animal
Law and Ethics symposium a young lady displayed some of her art work. She has
elected to devote her art almost entirely to an anti-meat theme, and her work
is very good (I used to be an artist myself). She is willing to talk about her
work and display some of it and demonstrate her techniques. The Vegetarian
Society seems to have no interest at all in such a talk, so I’ll mention it
here. If even vegetarians have no interest in her art I can’t imagine who
would buy it. But then, artists always have a hard time making a living (which
is why I’m an artist no longer).
