Kathy,

I was recently involved in creating a new festival but turned out our 100-member master gardener group was too small to pull it off. Our vegan meetup group is only three years old. If your goal is a Vegfest event, define the committees that need to be formed, such as - site negotiation, publicity, vendors, presentations, finances, social media, fundraisers, multi media, etc. Consider how to find right staff for the committees. Having a monetary fund seems would also be critical. Vegfest in 2015 or 2016 may be feasible. Sounds like you are willing to help organize it.

Jon Camp , from Vegan Outreach, will be coming to speak to our group in November...and also will be doing leafletting on the UT campus if anyone is interested in joining. We'll be posting more information and dates, times, etc next week. http://www.veganoutreach.org/enewsletter/jrcamp.html

I'm a volunteer outreach associate for Melanie Joy (Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows) and her organization CAAN. I work at finding speaking engagements for Melanie. I'd just like to say that it's difficult to get speakers to come to speak without a large forum (event, conference, festival, etc) of some kind, or unless they live close enough to travel and not spend $ to get there. Most of the well known ones charge for their presentations and need all their travel and accommodation costs covered, unless they are working from a grant.

What I would love to see happen here in Knoxville, is the Veg community coming together and hosting our first annual veg festival. What about "Knoxville Veg Fest 2013"! I think Atlanta is having their first one ever this year, or perhaps have had it already. There are dozens of veg fests across the country and some are really large, having lots of food, cooking demonstrations, speakers, entertainment, health info, vendor booths, etc. It's a great way to get exposure for our local veg organizations, and introduce others to a healthy and compassionate lifestyle. Maybe the group has already been thinking of this? I would love to see Knoxville on the map as a veg friendly city :)
