Visit Sikh Gurdwara on Sunday, June 30, 11 AM

The Sikh religion was founded in the northern Indian province of Punjab and promotes a vegetarian diet. Several of us visited the local Sikh house of worship ("gurdwara") in January and are ready to return. The 11 AM service consists of kirtan chanting for about an hour and 15 minutes, followed by a vegetarian meal. The local gurdwara is located at 704 Washburn Street, about a block north of West High School. Find the car wash on Sutherland and you have found Washburn Street.

Don't bring food, but monetary donations are accepted in a collection box. All heads should be covered in the building, but scarves are available to borrow. Seating is on the floor, but a pew is available for those who need it. Call Bob to let us know you are coming at[masked], or just show up that day.

Concert, Sri Lankan Food Demo on Sunday, August 4, 6 PM

Our organization was incorporated in August, 1983, and we are celebrating with a special   "subcontinental fundraising event" on Sunday, August 4 at our regular meeting spot, the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Church.

At 6 PM we will enjoy a demonstration of Sri Lankan "vegetable cutlets" (really delicious!) with Lakmal and Niranji, UT grad students who have been to many events this past year.  We are encouraging members and visitors to bring Indian-style dishes this night, to be placed on a special Indian foods table. At 7:15 we will have a concert of north Indian music by "Rangali" a trio of local musicians featuring Eugene Johnson of the Johnson Swingtet, and Brandon Singh. Be prepared to enjoy their traditional tabla, sitar, harmonium, and tambur. Cost of the potluck and concert will be $12 for members and $15 for the general public (you can join that night). We encourage "anniversary donors" to pay $30 that night and help us fund future programs and buy vegetarian outreach materials. Class and potluck only: $5 per person.

Bob is keeping a "sign up list" so he can know we will have at least 40 paying listeners. Call or write if you can commit to being on that list, if you can bring special food, or help clean up from 8:45 until 10 PM that night. [masked], or [address removed])
