Clingman's Dome Sunset ... and Stars?

Update: Joe points out that we need to be there by 7pm;  that 8pm is too late. Update#2: removed the RSVP filter - anyone can come even at last minute.

Sunset is at 7:55pm so try to meet at the parking lot no later than 7:00pm. There's lots of good shots to be had starting about an hour before sunset and of course after sunset. I (Joe) will be set up and ready to shoot by 7:00. If anyone wants to hike up to the tower, you'd want to be there by 6:30 pm. Lots of room to park in the lot & spread out, lots of wildflowers and other sights to photograph along with sunset. Plus if you want to try some star photography, you'll already be there.

Weather & cloud cover are key to success and aren't predictable. Heavy clouds or rain will cancel so we'll call it Thursday night.

Note: It takes 2.5 hours driving from Knoxville - going through Maryville/Townsend is faster than going through Pigeon Forge/Sevierville.

I missed yesterdays meet up due to work issues so I went tonight. It was well worth the drive down there from Morristown. Hopefully one of these days work will not be an issue and I can make a meet.

Since I couldn't make this meet up because of work, I kind of cheated & posted photos from last year when I went. It was about the same time of year, so I hope nobody minds.

Ok, I just checked & they're actually from 11/4/13. I'll post the dates on the pics. Thank you for letting me share them.

These are great images but please keep in mind next time that the idea behind meetup themes is to get out and shoot now. We have separate photo albums to upload older pictures & members will get links/notes that you posted something.

Someone on our Facebook page asked for directions, going through Maryville/Townsend. Here's what I wrote:

Go Alcoa Hwy, bear left when it splits. That turns into Hall Rd. Go straight until it intersects with U.S. 321 (Lamar Alexander Pkwy, big intersection, well marked). Turn left and go to Townsend. In Townsend at the red light (there's only one), do NOT turn left and follow 321 through Wears Valley. Go straight (Hwy 73) two or three miles. Bear left at the "Y" in the road and you'll be on Little River Road. Follow that all the way to Sugarlands Visitors Center. Turn right and you're on U.S. 441 in the Park, headed toward Clingman's.

Little River Road looks short on the map, but it's curvy and you'll be going 35-40 mph. But that's quickest and beautiful scenery!

I love getting lost!! Made my kids nervous though, and that is why they got me a GPS just one year ago. So, now when I head out for the back roads, I just turn it off until I'm ready to find my way. :)

      September 6, 2014

    • Joe R.

Ann, didn't occur to me to tell you how to get to Alcoa Hwy lol. You didn't lose much time going Walland to Metcalf. I was probably in Metcalf parking lot when you passed it. I stopped and took a nap :) Did you notice I turned into the exit road at Sugarlands?

The weather forecast looks fine, so it's a go for tomorrow! I suggest planning to arrive by 7 pm and allow an extra 15 minutes travel time due to the road being down to one lane through a tunnel on the way up. Take something warm to wear! There could easily be a thunderstorm, which might be great, but you may want to take rain gear too. I've got an extra camera cover if anybody wants to shoot sunbeams through rain or maybe a lighting bolt!

If anybody needs directions or has questions, my number is[masked], or message me on here. I'm probably leaving early and will be in the Park by 1:00 or 2:00 (no cell reception) to take some shots along the way, and probably at the Dome by 6:00 to saunter along a trail or two. For those that don't know, there is no cell phone service in the Park, so make arrangements in advance. Looking forward to it!

I'm going to go and would be happy to carpool. Due to Pigeon Forge traffic, I'm going to leave from my house (just off Alcoa Hwy) at 4:00, take the Little River Road and arrive in plenty of time to walk to the tower or anywhere else. There is room for several cars at my house. Dress warm! My address is 3400 Timberlake Dr, Knoxville and my phone is[masked]

You all know how much I would like to join you for this shoot, but it's not possible right now. I did my last sunset shoot from the Dome in mid-July, the clouds swirled around, and I was grateful for a polarfleece jacket. I recommend long pants and layers for this location. Have fun!

    3 · September 4, 2014

Kristina Plaas advises that the road (U.S. 441) is down to one lane going through the tunnel near Morton's Overlook. So add another 15 minutes to your travel time for traffic. Also, if Clingman's is socked in, Morton's (down lower) is a fantastic place for sunset. I've shot from there and there's a big parking area.

    1 · September 4, 2014

    • Ann B.

      Will have to google location.

      September 4, 2014

    • Joe R.

Morton's Overlook is in the Park at Mile Marker 13. But, we're still meeting at Clingman's Dome. If conditions are better down lower at Morton's, we may decide to go down there after seeing what conditions are like at Clingman's.

Another thought about Clingman's Dome. Years ago, for a Persid Metor Shower, Knoxville was socked in. I headed up 441, and at 4,000 ft, came up out of the clouds. Newfound Gap was black as ink because the clouds blocked out the light from below. You can have the worst looking sunset conditions at 1,000ft and spectacular conditions at 4,000 (Morton Overlook, below Newfound Gap) or 6,000. You never know until you've driven there.

NOTICE: Because this meetup was delayed, sunset is now earlier than posted above. On Sept 5, sunset is 7:58 in Knoxville, not 8:30. Allowing for mountains on the horizon, I would count on sunset around 7:45 (or earlier) at Clingman's Dome. I want photos prior to sunset too, not just right at sunset, so I'll probably be set up and ready to shoot around 7:00. Which means I'll arrive in the parking lot around 6:00 or 6:15, if I'm going to the tower. Anybody arriving at 8:00 will miss sunset.

It will take 2.5 hrs just to get through Pigeon Forge on a summer Friday. I have a prior commitment I hope to shed, in which case I'll come and would be happy to carpool and have a tripod I could loan.

Does someone have the app that tells you when the Moon rise and Sun Set are close in timing? I think there are several apps/sites out there. Anyway...that would be a fun time also.

    August 7, 2014

    • Joe R.

I have an app on my phone similar to Mike's, called Sun Surveyor. Invaluable for scouting out locations in advance. It says, on Sept 8, sunset is 7:54, moon rise is 7:35. Close, but the sky won't be dark when the moon rises. On Sunday August 8/10, sunset is 8:31, moon rise 8:20. All times are in Knoxville, and I didn't look up what phase the moon is in :)

Happy to help however I can. Sunset is at 8:33 pm on Aug 8. For a sunset, I usually try to be at my location an hour before sunset, to get set up and get some lovely shots as the sun goes down. So I would be there at 7:30. I'm probably going to hike to the tower (observation deck). That's no more than 30 minutes, right? Would love to try some star photography. Anybody know how to do that well? I bet Lance does.
