Movie: 'In Another Country (다른 나라에서)' by Hong Sang-soo

  • Jan 25, 2013 · 6:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

UPDATE 1/23: Showtime has been announced: 7:15 p.m.

Note: Showtime is 7:15 p.m. Running time is 89 minutes. We'll meet in front of the theater beforehand, and anyone who has trouble finding the venue or the group can call Alby at[masked]-5971.

The 13th feature by Hong Sang-soo ("The Day He Arrives," "Hahaha") is his first in English and stars Isabelle Huppert, two-time winner of Best Actress honors at the Cannes Film Festival (for 1978's "Violette Noziere" and 2001's "La pianiste").

For those who wish to purchase a discount ticket(s), send $8 per person through PayPal to albertleelim [at] hotmail [dot] com, designating the payment as a gift or payment owed, and please include the title of the movie as a note. Refunds to those who cancel by 5 p.m., Jan. 24.

Synopsis: A young film student, saddled with debt and lying low in a seaside town, writes three scenarios centering on a French woman (Huppert) who arrives in that same town and stirs up trouble with her very presence.

Martin Scorsese's introduction to Hong's "Woman Is the Future of Man": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-BttGmnVyw

"Hong Sang-soo’s intricate new comedy of broken romance reaches exquisite heights of self-mocking pathos, painterly finesse, and symbolic density." -- Richard Brody, The New Yorker

"Beguilingly simple, relaxed in its mastery and enhanced by Isabelle Huppert's impeccable poise" -- Maggie Lee, Variety

"Hong clearly enjoyed himself making this diverting piffle, which is beautifully shot and droll in the very best sense of the word. ... (Huppert) is at her radiant, warm, improvisatory best here." -- David Noh, Film Journal International

Official selection of the Cannes, Melbourne, Korean Film Festival in Australia, Toronto, Vancouver, Busan, BFI London, Hawaii, Abu Dhabi, Warsaw, Philadelphia and San Diego Asian film festivals

We'll meet and greet over dinner afterward. (See comments section for details.) Join us!

    Hey Alby,

Thanks for organizing. If you have chosen a restaurant yet, you might want to try Banana Island. It's nearby and serves Malaysia/Signaporean food and is pretty good. Is there a specific location we're supposed to meet at? I just wanted to know how we'll know who's there for the meetup.

    Thanks,
    Wilson

Thanks for saying that! I don't know why I read Daly City. I must have been looking at another page and had it in my head it's at Century in Daly City. That would have been a big issue haha. I'll make sure to go to the Opera Plaza.

A few more details on dinner: Dinnertime will ultimately depend on the movie showtime, but will most likely be around 9 p.m. The restaurant fits Yelp's "Within 4 blocks (of the theater)" and "$$ (moderate)" filters, and offers vegetarian options. I'll be closing the dinner to RSVPs at noon on Jan. 25, after which seating is subject to availability. Please bring cash, thank you. And again, please RSVP to the thread below (and nowhere else).
