Creative Cool Brainstorming meeting KORUS Korean festival 2013! Special meeting

  • to
  • La Madeleine

11858 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD (map)

    39.051319 -77.118034

  • Office is on the second floor.
  • Are you creative?  Do you like to help find & share new ideas? Cool! The KORUS festival needs volunteers to help out. (Location - TBD - will be near a metro station).

This meeting is to brainstorm for creative ideas, designs, etc. for the festival - online (website, Facebook, etc.) and offline (posters, flyers). The festival also has new mascots this year, and ideas on how to use them are also welcome for discussion.  Other areas possible are videos (promo, skits, viral videos), photos ("sharable" on social meeting), and music (original songs, parodies, etc.).  No experience necessary.

The festival is a 3 day celebration of Korean/American culture... the largest in the DC area (and probably on the East Coast).  This is our 3rd year helping the festival, and we have a larger role this year.  The festival will be in September (near the time of the Korean thanksgiving holiday "Chuseok").  The name KORUS is for KORean and US.

Same as in 2011 and 2012, we've been asked to help brainstorm, plan, learn, plan other special events, along with discuss other ideas such as what performers to have.

This is a special meeting, held mostly in English.

There is no cost to attend.

    ----

KORUS planning meeting & events - how to tell them apart:

    1. Regular full meeting ("big") meeting - held in Korean, run by the Director of the KORUS festival
    2. Special meetings for the different types of planning activities, such as: fundraising, PR (publicity), etc.
    3. Awareness/fundraising events: these are new, and are to raise interest in the event, and/or to raise money
    4. Poster/flyer distribution - in August and September there will be a need to put up the posters and small flyers (brochures).  These "street teams" will meet to get instructions, and then go out to different locations.  It's a lot of fun, and after there is a chance to meet again for dinner and to compare how the day went.

This event is the part of the series of meetings at the KAAW - Korean-American Association of the Washington Metropolitan Area.  KAAW is the non-profit that has organized the KORUS festivals every year.

Join us as we plan and help make this year's event bigger and better than ever!

No experience needed! No Korean language ability needed.  The meeting will be held in Korean with English as well.  The meeting will be a discussion of what needs to happen, and a chance to find out what you can do to help out this summer.

    Korean Festival Fact Sheet

The annual KORUS festival held each fall in Virginia, bringing together thousands of fans of Korean culture: music, food, entertainment, language, and more.  The 3-day event is free, and offers live performances, with food available from many vendors.

    Background:
The first festival was held in 2003 in Northern Virginia.  Over the next several years, the size and reach of the event grew.  The 2010 festival in Annandale, VA, had an estimate 70,000 attendees over 3 days. In 2012 the event was held in Bull Run Park in Virginia.

    Past performers include:

    • Bboys - hip hop dance group
    • JUMP! (Martial arts comedy show)
    • Mikyoung Park - Korean singer
    • Kaba Modern - musical group
    • Kim Chung Soo - singer
    • Gamblerz Crew - hip hop dance group
    • traditional Korean dancers

Delicious food dishes served at the festival include bulgogi, kalbi, and ddokbokki, with side dishes including kimchi and rice.

I'm not feeling well. Also note that the restaurant I indicated was a different La Madeline. Don't want people to be confused.

The closest metro for the Rockville location is white flint- if everyone is ok with this, the location can stay here. otherwise, there is a la madeline in bethesda, which is walking distance to Bethesda Metro. Please let me know what you all want to do. Sorry for the last minute (possible) change.

Forecast here says 100% chance of snow all day Wednesday, with details of 5 inches. Not looking like a workable meeting night ;) http://forecast.weath...

I'm thinking this Wednesday may not be great... I did not have time to order nice weather! Chance it may snow all day - http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=38.87179021382536&lon=-77.13226318359375

The Bethesda La Madeline may work out... I've used their private back room area. (Here is a pic: http://www.amwa-midatlantic.org/images/frOffice_01.jpg ). Other options include coffee shops, but those tend to have background noise. There are places near Dupont Circle that we've used, which would work as well (Steam Cafe, or Trio Restaurant).
