New York City trip - Broadway, Korea Town, and more!

  • Times Square

Times Square, New York, NY (map)

    40.759011 -73.984472

  • Road Trip to NYC!

Enjoy the Big Apple... Manhattan... to get away from the DC area...

Go for the day - Dec 11 - or go for 1 or 2 nights. The group will meet up with people who go, and people can pick different activities and options.

Fri: go up on your own if you want to go early.

Sat morning: go up on a bus, or on your own.
Sat afternoon: the group will pick a place to meet in mid-town/Koreatown/Penn Station.
(most buses go to Madison Square Garden, near Penn Station)
maybe try lunch at one of the momofuku locations.
Sat afternoon: pick an activity or activities. Crazy photo times!!
Sat evening: Korean BBQ dinner at Won Jo restaurant on 32nd street.
They use hot lava rocks instead of gas, and have awesome panchan!
(I've eaten there and loved it - Paul)
Sat night: Hit the town... Times Square, Greenwich Village, more...
(Some people will take their bus back the same day, usually by dinnertime)
(Broadway play? Boat cruise tour? Leave your comments about what to do!)

Sat overnight: hotel options are being explored.

Sun morning: breakfast, checkout, more sightseeing.
    Sun afternoon: travel back.

(Note: There are some "honorary organizers" listed for this event, who may or not be going, who helped shape this idea in October & November. The list will be updated before the event happens.)

The idea behind the NYC trip is that it's pretty easy to go by bus, and over the years many members said they wanted to see the Koreatown up there.

There are several suggested activities we can do as a group:

    * Eating in NY's Koreatown on 32nd street or in Chinatown.

    * Broadway afternoon show (in advance, or buying same-day available off-price tickets), or off-Broadway.

    * Boat cruise to the Statue of Liberty or tour around Manhattan.

    * Times Square - walking, shopping (the Times Square "location" shown is a suggestion only)

    How to Get There:
(These are suggestions from members, and not recommendations)
    Bus: http://megabus.com... and http://vamoosebus.com...
    Car: share a ride
    Train: http://www.amtrak.com...
Plane: fly to Newark (NJ), LaGuardia, or Kenneday airports From Antonio's idea: "Has anyone though of doing a day trip on a Saturday or either an overnight trip to NYC to experience Korea Town in the Big Apple? There are many good Korean BBQ restaurants off of West 32nd street between 5th Ave and Broadway. This would be a great way to experience NYC with a Korean focus."

Anyone want to take Connie up on her offer to drive? Anyone else buying (or bought) tickets?

The last forecast I saw for Saturday looks great - almost 50 degrees and mostly sunny.

Thanks Connie - what days & times are you thinking of going up and coming back?

All - FYI over Thanksgiving I was in NYC a little and drove through Times Square & down 32nd Street (K-town) on a Friday night. I will post some pics. After midnight there were a lot of people hanging out on 32nd street - club crowd.

I am taking the Megabus on Saturday, Dec 11 at 6:15am and arrives in NYC at 10:35am. I will be returning from New York on Sun Dec 12 riding the 3:30pm Megabus, which returns to DC at 7:50pm. Amtrak was more expensive. My total cost for Megabus was only $42.50 for a round trip ticket.

There is Bolt bus also which picks up from Union Station. If you book today, tix are about $20 (one way I think). Megabus looked about same price. Hostels are not badly priced for NY ($20+), can check out hostelworld.com and if there's a group of us, then we could get a whole room to ourselves and not risk having any weirdos in the room which would bring the price down compared with getting a hotel. I've never been to NY so if I go, I'd like to stay overnight. Prices do go up if you wait.

    November 11, 2010

  • Paul

We are close... I can post this as a meetup anytime. I just need to have a date that most people can go. The event was typed up as a draft several days ago.

If someone wants to drive then say how many people you can take and when you would be leaving & coming back.

For people that don't get to go, we can have another trip in the winter or spring. There is the Korean Film Festival NY 2011 in February. http://kaffny.com/kaffny-2011

If you want to hang out in Manhattan in general (Soho,Chinatown,Broadway,Times Square) this would be a good idea.
But if you want real good Korean food and shopping you have to go to Flushing in Queens. Northern Boulevard is the heart of NY's Korean community. Problem is it's a long way from all the fun in the city.

Hi Paul, if we wanted to do a trip to NYC, what's the best way to go about it. i don't know how many people would prefer driving but I know parking is very expensive in DC. The train from DC to NYC might be cheaper or maybe doing a flight or riding a bus. Do you think sometime in December would be best to allow people enough time for planning their schedules? I'm up for an overnight or day trip but I would really love to catch a play on broadway. If you need any help with planning let me know.

If you do a daytrip, you can get there early, go to tkts in Times Square (the same-day show tickets discounter), grab seats to a matinee, and end the night with dinner in KTown and what not. Overnight expands the nighttime options by that much, obviously.

    October 26, 2010

  • Hannah P.

Let's do it!!. I just recently went there thru mega bus. It was cheap and nice and clean.

    October 26, 2010

  • Paul

Overnight might be something to try as an option, or if people drive then there is more flexibility. We did a day trip last year and 6 to 8 people were there, traveling on different buses.

We ate at Shilla restaurant in K-town on 32nd street (I believe it's not related to Shilla bakery here).

Maybe we could incorporate a play? If enough people sign on to go then we could get a group rate to see something. http://www.newyorkcitytheatre.com/index.php

Jen's right, but there is a little more to it. There are lots of bars and other smaller restaurants above the street level that are more interesting (Pocha 32 late night is a favorite). That said, not sure that going there just for KTown is worth the trip necessarily... The hottest restaurant that involves Korean food right now is Momofuku (fusion), whose head chef is David Chang.

It is much much better to go there overnight, since like Jen said the place is deserted before dinnertime.

    October 21, 2010

  • Jen

I've been to ktown NYC several times.. and its really not that big.. usually it takes me and whomever i'm with less than a half hour to get through it...

    It consists of :
    A few hotels (not korean)
a few karaoke places. I've been to woww It's fairly decent.
    5-10 restaurants
    1 tiny shop
    1 korean bookstore
    1 tiny tiny tiny hmart
    1 pinkberry

and too be honest the place is practically deserted anytime before 7 pm.

    October 21, 2010

  • Kia Y.

The only stipulation I would please ask for is that ample notice be given. I have kids so I'd need to plan ahead for their care so I could go.

    October 20, 2010

I was just talking about this with a friend, doing a weekend trip to somewhere close. Yay!
