벚꽃 축제 Cherry Blossom Walk and Fireworks Festival

  • This location is shown only to members

Time: 1 PM – 9 PM (Fireworks start at 8:30 PM)

Location: Southwest Waterfront –[masked] Water Street, SW
Cost: FREE
More information available here: http://bit.ly/PMX5tZ

This Saturday, April 5, join us for the Cherry Blossom Fireworks Festival.  There will be free music, family friendly water-related activities, cultural experiences, live entertainment, and delicious food at multiple outdoor venues.

The Festival begins at 1, but we will start our day at the Smithsonian Station (Independence Ave, South Entrance) at 3:45pm and start walking to the Cherry Blossoms at 4pm sharp!  We will walk around the Tidal Basin, past the MLK, FDR, and Jefferson Memorials and then to the Southwest Waterfront.  This is a three mile walk and will take more than an hour at a leisurely pace with plenty of time for photos.  Please wear your walking shoes and bring water!  There is a shorter route for those that prefer or you can just meet us at the festival.  http://bit.ly/11dG9y6

We will arrive at the Southwest Waterfront around 5:30 pm to enjoy the festivities!  A few of the scheduled events are a food truck rally, a beer garden, and plenty of music and art. Let's all find someplace to sit by 8, because the fireworks begin at 8:30!  After that, some members may head to Annandale or somewhere else for food or karaoke.

RAIN POLICY:  The event takes place rain or shine.  If it rains we will take a shorter route and/or change the order of events.

Had an amazing time. The cherry blossom walk was beautiful and relaxing, and the karaoke was awesome! Thank you so much for welcoming me into the group. Hoping to see everyone again (and meet new people) really soon!

Is there anyone taking the Green Line metro to get to D.C? I'm coming from the Greenbelt metro station in Maryland and I'm looking for a traveling buddy or two. I'm also asking for (if not the same) traveling buddy to walk back with me to the Smithsonian Metro station at the end of the event. Don't want to walk around in D.C in the dark by myself.

Update 3! So, it's a breezy, warm(ish), sunny Saturday. I think I'll take a walk with 60 of my closest friends around the Tidal Basin. Like this post if you're in! :-D

Housekeeping details first. I will be arriving a little early to greet people. I'll be the slightly overwhelmed guy with a big banner that says Korean Waves. Please check in with me (name and/or screen name will be helpful). I'll also have nametags and/or something else to identify you as part of the group.

If you are going to be late, that's fine, but please let me know. You can post a comment here, send me a text (number above), or give me a call. If I don't answer right away, please know that I'm just a little busy and I'll try to get back to you asap.

I will be posting here and responding to location requests with a link to our current location and a landmark. If that doesn't work for you, let me know. Also check the photos that are posted.

Can't wait to see you all there!

Lastly, some people will want to keep the party going afterwards. There is no formal plan, but if you have something in mind, please share with the group. Because of the size of this group, we may end up with a couple of smaller groups around DC, MD, and VA. If anyone is planning on Karaoke, count me in, but we should make a reservation!

      April 5, 2014

    • Jason West 서.

If you have a sharpie (name pen), could you bring it? It will speed up the name tag process if we have extras. :-)

Hey, this is a huge event... Jason is doing a lot of planning to make is a success! I believe he could use some help from some of you when walking around as a group. As we say "herding the cats and dogs", since people don't automatically stick together. As Jason wrote, bring water (although food trucks are around to sell you some, that also takes time if 50 people line up to buy it... lol). Bringing some snacks such as a protein bar can work as well. (I have another event to run at that time, and I did walk around there earlier this week... beautiful as the little buds are starting to show some color). There are bathrooms near the MLK Jr. memorial (by the gift shop) and under the Jefferson Memorial. For photo ideas, if someone has the power, they can always do this type of picture: http://www.meetup.com/koreans/photos/13991962/219408522

Update 2: Wow, 45 RSVPs so far! This is going to be great! I can't wait to meet you all. ^_^

Weather is looking good so far (*fingers crossed*). Looks like a high of 60 with partly cloudy skies, perfect for a nice leisurely walk. You may want to bring a jacket for the evening portion of the event. The trees are a little behind schedule (c'mon Mother Nature!), but I'm definitely seeing some pink on the NPS webcam (http://bit.ly/1i8653m) and it looks like some trees are starting to bloom already, especially near the MLK Memorial.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Do you know where there is parking near the Southwest Waterfront for people who are driving there?

    March 29, 2014

    • Jason West 서.

You are correct James, the SmarTrip card is a dollar cheaper per trip on metro and comes with other benefits. Find out more at http://www.wmata.com/...

Update 1: Weather is looking good for Saturday. It all depends on when this next storm rolls through, but hopefully it'll cooperate and we'll have clear skies and warm weather! I'll post another weather update later in the week.

We are meeting at the Smithsonian entrance at the SW corner of 12th and Independence. We are NOT meeting at the National Mall entrance! http://www.wmata.com/rail/evacuation/20.055.pdf

Due to the size and mobile nature of this event, it may be hard to find the group. We will try to stick to the schedule above. I will also be bringing one or two signs to help you find the group. I'll post a picture of the signs later this week so you know what to look for. For those joining the group late or that get lost/left behind/busy doing something else, I will post occasional location updates and photos throughout the event and will post my cell phone number later this week.

If you have any questions, please post them below. See you Saturday!

3:45 is much better for me than 1pm. So are we walking back the 3 miles, a total of 6+ miles that day?

      March 29, 2014

    • Jason West 서.

No, it'll be much less than that. SW Waterfront is near two stations. We are just taking the scenic route to see the blossoms.
