Hello, (Annyong haseyo),

This is the weekly group update...

First - today until midnight you can get a Groupon deal for $40 of Korean/Japanese food for $20
at Hwaro/Norito restaurant ().  I will be using my $20 off for the group to enjoy some pajun and
another appetizer at our
dinner event at Hwaro on Sept 6.  Thanks to AJ for telling us about this deal!  See deal details here.

This weekend we have...
  • English and Korean Language study group - members like you enjoyed last week's event, and this week we will also have more focus for 1-on-1 exchange & coaching.  If you can't make it you may enjoy the videos posted on the event page. .
  • Korean Violinist Joo Young concert - Kennedy Center - the weather will be nice to relax on the rooftop terrace before the concert.  Get your tickets and join us! (I bought an extra one and will get more if people are interested).
  • POW! The Party Of The Week organizers are busy figuring out the plans for upcoming weekend nights... rumor has it that this weekend will be low key with no formal event.
And the Kollaboration DC 2010 show is coming up in one month!  We've updated our event page now that tickets are on sale.

News & Blog stories:
  • Pioneer of Korean matchmaking - "The firm has developed a Spousal Index, an algorithm based on such references as education, occupation and family background (usually fathers occupation) to find the right standard for spouse."
  • English Language Schools Sprout in South Korea (NY Times) - "By 2015, if all goes according to plan, 12 prestigious Western schools will have opened branch campuses in a government-financed, 940-acre Jeju Global Education City"
  • Lotte plans to break global top 10 by 2014

  • Korean pop music stars' trend for "Big Eye" contacts creates warnings in Thailand - Warning: This fad may kill you - "All of these trends are lumped under what sociologists call the Korean Wave. (The press has called it Kim Chic.)" ... "Teens across Asia are now addicted to Korean pop culture: soaps, boy bands and films."
And speaking of Thailand, last Friday I started the DC MD & VA "Thai Food Lover's Meetup" and by the end of the next day it had over 100 members.  The first meetup is this Friday at Benjarong in Rockville.
