1. Reception Details: Great Korean artwork has often been produced at the confluence of tradition and innovation. Kim Sun Doo is no exception, as a contemporary painter well versed in classical Korean art styles. Many of his works adopt the traditional ink and Hanji paper style of the Joseon Dynasty, but with a freeform vitality and creativity. Kim?s artistic grounding paired with vision led him to be chosen to create reproductions and original compositions in the style of 19th century Korean master Jang Seung-Ub, for use in the acclaimed 2002 film, Chihwaseon. The ethereal styles of both Jang and Kim evoke a flowing dreamscape of the natural world, simultaneously set in tradition and striving to break free of all artistic conventions. This exhibition features many of the works handled in the film, as well as Kim?s completely original art (on display through Nov. 4).

2. Movie Details: Chihwaseon, known also by the English title Painted Fire, chronicles the life of Jang Seung-Ub [masked]), a tormented but brilliant painter who lived against a backdrop of national turmoil. In the late 19th century, the Korean nation struggled to find its own identity amid growing influence from regional imperial powers and political revolution looming at home. Through his art, Jang came to embody the troubled, impassioned soul of a nation in search of itself. Directed by Im Kwon-taek, a living legend of Korean cinema, Chihwaseon won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 and remains a hallmark of modern Korean culture. The film is known for its elegant cinematography that strives to capture the landscape, seasons, and traditional culture of Korea. To view trailers for the film, visit or (third-party websites; viewer discretion advised).

In a special presentation, Kim Sun Doo will also discuss his experiences working on Chihwaseon, including his artistic research, contribution as artistic advisor, and acting a minor part in the film.
