Fall UC Victory Garden Class (Four Sunday afternoons)

NOTE: This class will meet for 4 Sunday afternoons from 3-6 starting on September 15th, and continuing on 9/22, 9/29 and 10/6

As part of the initiative to increase local food production the UC Cooperative Extension and Pasadena Learning Gardens are offering Victory Garden Classes.  These classes provide participants with the knowledge to start a home edible garden, and to be part of a community doing the same.  The group will meet four Sunday afternoons from 3-6 p.m.  Taught by Master Gardener Mark Rice  with occasional visits from other local experts, this is a great opportunity to start a great Fall garden and / or create the foundation for a great year round garden.  Participants receive certificates from the University of California which can be helpful if you're interested in working on edible garden projects.

Our text is available at the first class for $6 (optional), and can be downloaded / previewed from here.

Note: this class is being publicized widely by the county so don't rely on the RSVP number.  RSVP here at the meet-up and send me an e-mail ([masked]) if you want to attend.  I'll ask you to send payment or make other arrangements to reserve your space.

We will be building the start of a Community Farm during this class.

Thanks, I hope we're going to talk edible landscapes.

I was teaching so I'll leave that to others, but what a great group. A diversity of skills, and situations, and a consistently high level of enthusiasm... This makes teaching so easy, Thanks.

Hi Mark: I took the class in the spring, which btw, was great, Thank you. Does this class cover the same basic material? Is there information and an emphasis on growing during the fall/winter season? Thanks. Best, Mary

It's pretty much the same. I rant a little about fava beans which is my favorite winter cover crop but it is otherwise very similar. We do an intermediate class in November where I still do the worms, but everything else is take to another level.

    Mark,

May or may not come by to give you your key to the airstream

Not taking the class, just saying hello.

I hope you rant about beets, carrots, and sugar peas as well :)

I also may or may not bring what may or may not be purple broccoli seed. (organic grown, filtered water, full sun buggers, that maaaay or may not be pure broccoli; I know it was the only Brassica flowering in my yard, I do not know if any neighbors within a half mile had any flowering Mustards or other Cabbages...and there are gardens that close to my house!)

    Take care,
    John

I need this class. It will be helpful to learn how to really produce more than tomatoes and lettuces.

    August 29, 2013

    • Mark

Never dismiss tomatoes 8^) I'm sure you'll get a lot out of it. See you soon.

I love tomatoes and have eaten every one of them that the birds and pests have not gotten into. I just want to be successful at broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts, squash, etc etc etc too:)!

I sent an email as well and have not heard back. I will bring my payment with me to the first class. I'm confirmed on this site, but please let me know if there is anything else that is required. Thanks!

How can I make the payment ?

Would really like to take this class. Are children welcome?

    September 2, 2013

    • Mark

We have had a number of kids come and it's always been good. You just need to make sure they aren't too disruptive. I've had a two month old infant and a 16 year old kid who became a great gardener...
