As part of the initiative to increase local food production the UC Cooperative Extension is offering Victory Garden Classes. This is a special intermediate class co-taught by Master Gardener Mark Rice and Urban homesteader and community organizer Hop Hopkins.
There will be 4 segments in two days: you may attend all or part. $80 for whole event includes lunch, $40 for a day includes lunch if preregistered, and $20 for a morning or afternoon session - $25 at the door if there is room - probably no lunch.
Saturday November 9:
9:30 am Soil, worms, teas and biodynamics
12 pm lunch
1 pm - 4 pm Keeping Chickens
Saturday November 16:
9 am propagation and seed saving
11:30 - community transformation by garden
12 pm lunch (soup and bread - provided)

These classes provide participants with knowledge from the instructors and the participants. Beginners and Experts are welcome. Participants receive certificates from the University of California which can be helpful if you're interested in working on edible garden projects.
The Intermediate class will not have a specific text, but will encourage students to select an area of expertise and pursue that: Soil, Companion Planting, Chickens, Bees, Urban Agriculture, School Gardens and Permaculture will be options. See the book list on the Gardening Tab at our web site PasadenaLearningGardens.org - we'll also be discussing how to turn your garden into a certified farm so you can sell at a Farmer's Market. There will be an optional field trip to the Altadena Farmers Market on a Wednesday the 15th at 6 p.m. or you can listen to an interview with the founders at our radio show archive also at the web site.
Note: this class is being publicized widely by the county so don't rely on the RSVP number. RSVP at the site and send Hop an e-mail ([masked]) if you want to attend.
We will be building the start of our first Community Farm during this class.
