Facebook DBA, Chris Schneider presents "Scaling with MySql" on Tuesday, Feb 24

No location was chosen

Chris Schneider of Facebook will present Scaling MySQL.

Chris Schneider Bio:
MySql DBA since 2004 but originally started as a LAMP developer; I started
working as a MySql DBA in the Web 2.0 world more specifically GoDaddy.com,
love the commercials. When I started at Godaddy.com there were only 127
servers with 11 different web applications all supported by MySql databases.
In my first year I supported over 400% growth as the only MySql DBA. By the
end of my 3.5 years at GoDaddy.com I hired and trained a 4 DBA team; two of
which have gone on to work at MySql AB and Facebook. After building and
watching my baby grow at Godaddy.com to over 1200 servers and 40+ supported
web apps it was time to move on.

Facebook has been a wild ride so far! One of my main goals is to make sure
that MySql at Facebook scales like a champ! Over the past 8 months I have
tested countless configurations and architectures; all of which with the
goal of scaling and performance.

This Meetup:
During this meetup session I would like to discuss different technologies
and consolidation methodologies. Some of which include Sun Niagra (t1000
and up) , file systems (xfs and zfs), innodb performance and sharding.

Location information:
1. The meeting room is called "Martinique".
2. Try to arrive on time as a Sun badged employee will need to operate elevators to get you up to the 10th floor.
3. If you do arrive late, call Joe at [masked] so we can have someone come down and escort you up.
4. There is a visitor's parking lot. Last time the parking was free but it's not positive so if you want to be sure of free parking, park in the neighborhood. Sorry for the confusion.

Where/how to park? Is there a fee for parking?

And what room/floor? Do we need to be escorted up? And what office/person to call if need escort?

    TIA

    Steve

I am just a tweaker and so this was a great meetup to get the scope of MySql. I appreciated the details they could share re GoDaddy and Facebook and learned a lot! Look forward to the next meetup :D

Chris and Kevin did a great job answering questions about their experience at GoDaddy and Facebook. It puts into perspective some of the scaling considerations and challenges with such a large MySQL architecture.

This was a rare opportunity to have a glimpse on how one of the busiest web site's database is being run. Chris shared a lot of valuable insight based on his extensive and I would say rather extreme experience. The value of this sort of experience is hard to overestimate. Separate thanks to Sun people for offering their support in organizing this event.

Interesting, would have like to heard more architecture info but they can only disclose so much. Looking forward to stored procedure discussions at a future event.
