Mount Lukens - (8.5 miles & ~2.9k ft gain, City of Glendale)

Not many have hiked this trail since the Station Fire back in 2009. But over the past few years, there are some green again on the mountains/trails, though you will still witness some residue of the damage from the fire.

With hard work from the volunteers, things are slowly getting back to how they were before and more hikers are hiking up to Lukens again. So, lets do this before the summer heat and the snakes awaken/active again from their hibernation.

We will start from Deukmejian Wilderness Park and head up Cresenta View Trail to the summit then we will get back to the parking lot via the Rim of The Valley Trail.

1) Up, up, up, and looking down at the city.

2) Not sure what this is for??

3) Trail surrounded by reminders from The Station Fire

4) Summit

5) On the way back

Parking: Free at both paved and dirt lots. No need for adventure pass.

Note: I highly recommend long sleeved shirts and long pants. Plenty of overgrown shrubs rubbing against you along the trail. Also, I flicked off a couple ticks on this hike a few months back.

Recommendation:
- Good traction trail shoes
- Water: 2+ liters
- Lightweight layers, rain/wind breaker jacket (Check weather forecast)
- Lunch & snacks
- Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
- Trekking Poles
- Small camera/cell phone

    • Van

Hi Josi. I would want to carpool, but we are coming from 2 different points going to Glendale.

Can we start the hike a bit later since we lose an hour that morning from daylight savings? And what time do we estimate to finish?

    March 4, 2013

    • Alan

Sorry, the hike is already scheduled and any change to it will effect others' plan for the day. As for estimate to finish, I normally estimate 2 miles per hour average, unless I am going with people I am very familiar with. So, I would say around 12:15pm is when we finish, on the conservative side. But I do see there are a few hikers(i.e. Dewey(hidden, but will show up on the day of the hike)/Lia) on here who can probably do it in like 3 hours or less.

  • Van

Hi Alan. So u think I make it for this hike? :-)

    February 18, 2013

    • Alan

Sure, you definitely can, as long as you are ready for up up and more up. But I do highly recommend you get new shoes with better traction, as I am sure you don't enjoy having your behind hitting the ground on/off there nor slide into some unwelcome plants/objects. Last but not least, hopefully no more muscle ache afterward? :)

      February 18, 2013

    • Van

Thanks Alan. Got my new shoes, even break into it with a light hike. Hopefully, I won't fall like last time. As for no muscle pain afterward, I might be too wishful to hope for it too soon. :-) See u at the hike.
