Hiking Mt. Baldy

Distance: 11.25 miles.  Elevation gain: 4300’ .  Peak elevation: 10,084’.  Difficulty: Advanced

Carpool at REI Arcadia: 7:50 a.m. or Meet at trailhead: 9 a.m. [So we have time to eat proper breakfast and drive safely. We will join up with two other groups.]

Trailhead address: Mount Baldy Road & Falls Road, Angeles National Forest, Mount Baldy, CA 91759. Trailhead coordinates:[masked], [masked]

This is a strenuous hike and your heart will be pounding the moment you step on the trail. We begin on the trail to the ski hut (2.6 miles) on a moderately steep grade. We’ll cross baldy bowl, then hike north up a ridge to the summit (for 2 miles). This section is very steep and there are very few switchbacks. Once at the top, you have the reward of a 360 panorama.

After resting at the peak we’ll take the Devil’s Backbone route to the resort.  This route has stunning views all around. We'll then take ski lift back down ($12 adult, 50% discount for 65 and over).  This is the easiest of all the route options.

NOTE: The Climb for Hero fundraising event is scheduled one week prior to our hike. In 2013, that program attracted a huge turnout and many none-hikers took short cuts and destroyed sections of the trails. Some inexperienced "hikers" needed help to come back down.

BRING

Enough water, snack, sun screen, hiking boots, hiking poles.  Ten essentials http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html.  Bring your banker or $12 to ride the ski lift down :)

Need:  Adventure pass is required to park.

Sorry, I think I should get 100% recovered from my cold before I try this advanced hike. Have fun there!

The weather forecast for Sunday is AM Shower for Mt. Baldy, CA. That means it is likely snowing at the peak (like last Saturday). But this hike is a "go". It will add more excitement and challenges. We can do it if we are prepared for the increment weather. Keep warm and dry. Bring extra layer in case you need it. Wear water-resistant outfit, and bring high energy snack.

For folks who do not carpool from REI Arcadia, we'll meet at trailhead at 9 am. We will start hiking at 9:15 after introducing ourselves and networking with another group. The weather may make it easier to get a parking spot.

Good thing I did the scouting hike, I got work this weekend. But I would definitely do this hike again, it's just so much fun!

    March 27, 2014

  • Paul W

Dear all, I went for a scout hike last Saturday. The last 1/4 mile of the summit was covered in snow and gusty wind blew now and then. So, suggest wearing layers for warm and flexibility. In addition to sun glasses and hat, you may appreciate having something to cover your ears and a pair of gloves if the weather is as windy and cold as last Saturday.

This is the last straw. Thanks for the additional info, I've being consulting w people about my hiking skill, I don't think I'm advanced level yet! Enjoy the hiking and stay safe! I will try to catch up slowly.

      March 26, 2014

    • Paul W

You can still join this hike. We will meet a larger group of 25 and together we'll have 36 people. A good number of hikers will likely turn around at the Ski Hut or the Baldy Bowl. Ever the Ski Hut alone may be worthy of the drive.

This hiking sounds very intense, should I be scared?

    March 24, 2014

For your advance planning, if we can make if to the top and still like hiking, let's hike San Gorgonio peak the last Sunday of April. It's 11,503' at the top and 17.5 miles round trip.
