Hike to Temescal Canyon

Loop & Skull Rock

Remember why L.A. is Living Awesome.

Highlights: Catch great ocean views, trek through a densely wooded canyon, climb up to Skull Rock and get an adventurous workout!

Meetup Time: 9:00am

Meetup location: Temescal Gateway Park, 15601 Sunset Boulevard, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272.

This trail has great views of L.A. and the entire coastline, with lots of trees (oaks, maples and sycamores) and a small waterfall. It’s not an easy hike and you’ll definitely sweat! But it’s truly rewarding and you’ll remember why you love L.A. so much! :) During the summer, the proximity to the coast and ocean breezes are enough to keep you comfortable and cool.  Plenty of cover for shade for much of the trail and a nice little stream on the grounds.

The loop starts out on a narrow trail and weaves through some dense tree cover to a small waterfall. Afterwards, it begins climbing almost 1,000 feet in the first mile. At the intersection, we’ll take the road less traveled and head uphill a ½ mile to  Skull Rock, where we’ll rest, cool off and admire the magnificent view.

Scenery: 4 / 5 stars

Time estimate: 2.5 to 3 hours

Level: Beginner - Intermediate

Miles: 4 miles round trip

Elevation Gain: 1000 feet

Please Bring: plenty of water (2 liters / 4 water bottles minimum); hiking shoes, water shoes or trail runners; sunblock; hat

Directions: Temescal Gateway Park - 15601 Sunset Boulevard in Pacific Palisades, CA 90272.

From Los Angeles, head west on the Santa Monica Freeway (10) and take Pacific Coast Highway West. Turn north (right) on Temescal Canyon Road and drive 1.1 miles. Just after the intersection with Sunset Boulevard, turn left into the parking area ($7 fee) for Temescal Gateway Park. You can park inside and pay a parking fee or park for free along Sunset Boulevard (just mind the signs).

Optional lunch at Bay Cities! The Godmother is to die for...

Address: 1517 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90401

The hike was great, easy for the most part! The view from the top of the rock next to the Skull Rock was excellent.
