Fish Canyon Hike 2013

Fish Canyon 2013

Come join us on this Earth Day weekend adventure to discover (or rediscover) and appreciate one of Mother Nature’s gifts, Fish Canyon Falls! This 90-foot, three-tier waterfalls is only accessible on a very limited number of days in spring through this particular hiking trail. Like most waterfalls, this cascade is most spectacular in early spring and gets drier toward the summer. Don’t miss your chance to experience this expedition or you might have to wait until next year!

Distance: ~5 mi (RT, in-out trail)
Elevation: 2,280 ft gain/loss
Difficulty:5/10
Duration: ~3 hrs
What to wear: Hiking shoes, sunblock, and dressed for the weather.
What to bring: Yourself (friends welcome), H2O (at least 1 liter), snack, and optional sandals + towels + clothes if you plan to swim, walking sticks, and first-aid kit (especially if you're a klutz :).
*******Important Notes******* Please EAT something before the hike.

Thanks everyone for coming to the hike! Thanks to Xiao for being our camera man! I think he also added an extra picture of the waterfalls from the same time last year... Well, this isn't the best year for So.Cal waterfalls but it was a GREAT HIKE with all of you nonetheless! PS Erik, we didn't verbally suggested it but it was obvious that a picture of your $30+ haircut was expected.

I'm just impressed how organized this part of the Fish Canyon hiking trail is. I mean from the moment you enter the parking lot, they have crew helping you find a good spot for parking, and the shuttle van to the hiking trail and back again to the parking lot is so convenient. I feel like I'm writing a Yelp review here right now, but I really never experienced this kind of convenience from a hiking trail before. It's great. Easy hike :)

Hi, I heard that a group of 50 will be starting the fish canyon hike 1/2 hour before us. We may have a problem with parking.

Ah so is there going to be new time for the hike?

      1 · April 19, 2013

    • Bik

We are still meeting at 9:15 AM at the trail head... it's better to completely miss the train than trying to beat it only to catch it on the track.

Can I bring my son on this hike?

    April 18, 2013

    • Bik

In what context did you imply? The park doesn't have an age limit as far as I'm concern. For meetup/entourage, the rule of thumb is ALL attendees are responsible for their own safety among other common senses that applied. Minors must be accompanied by their legal gradients and, thus, their responsibility.

Sorry, typing on my iPhone... I meant "guardians"... As far as the trail, I've seen children hiked up without problems but then again... I've seen a 20-year-old fainted after climbing a few flight of stairs. Everyone is different and you should exercise your best judgement. Cheers!

Ooh, let's get lunch at Presidential Thai like one of the last times we hiked here for Meetup!

Lol. I don't remember any of the "trail" being dangerous and I'm certain that I been there well over half a dozen of times... actually, I took my nephew there once. He hiked all the way through and he was ~7 at the time... If you are scare of height, there are some flight of root/rock/dirt stairs of about ~5 feet. And toward the falls, the path goes over some rocks along the side of the canyon... And if you decide to jump into the pool (as shown in the picture above), that's about ~20-foot drop although it'd likely suggest that you're not afraid of height... Nevertheless, we are hiking through nature and not a shopping mall, thus, please take precaution at every step. Thanks.

It's a fairly easy trail until about the last 1/5 of it where the trail narrows and gets a bit higher off the main ground. But it's all about patience and awareness at that point. Nothing terribly difficult to do =)

I would love to join you guys but I'm doing a fundraiser run at the same time as this hike. Have fun though. I would really be careful with the trail, when I went there a woman almost fell and if it wasn't for six guys to help her out she would have been seriously hurt. :)

Oh yea, it's fun to see some people rush a steep decline on their ass, definitely :)

      April 16, 2013

    • Lisa K

Lol. I wouldn't rush a steep decline. And if anyone falls, it will probably be me. =/

So do I have to know someone to meet up?
    Sorry new at meetup.

    April 16, 2013

    • Bik

Please follow the instruction as provided above. Wait at the trail head if you arrive there early. If you spot a group of people (mostly Asians) then that's probably us. FYI, I was informed that another meetup group has just recent scheduled the same hike as well but at an earlier time.

That's a great hike. The path is narrow though, so be careful. Enjoy!

Did this hike via Van Tassel Ridge last week with another meetup. It was a challenge. I would like to join you guys, seems like an easier route. But we have to take a shuttle?

    April 8, 2013

    • Bik

Yes, a shuttle will take us right to the trail head where the group will meet. Your hike was definitely a lengthier version as it probably required you to connect a few trails (~10+ miles) to get to the same waterfalls. Albeit, I do enjoy cutting corners when they're worth saving. (:

    • Ryan Oliver

K, I will sign up under BFC cuz I don't have attendance in that group yet :)

      April 14, 2013

  • James

Have to skip out after all. Going paintball that same day.

    April 4, 2013

  • Lisa K

This sounds good but you guys are going so early.

    March 20, 2013

    • Bik

Okay, I'm a reasonable person. I wanted to go really early because it may get very crowded later in the day but since the group may be relative small it shouldn't be a major factor... Plus the icy water will feel much nicer when day gets a little warmer. Cheers

Oh, thanks! I'd better go then.
