October: Formal Presentations, Santa Monica

Ops, Devs, All!

For October, our last formal meetup of the year we'll be meeting in Santa Monica at Riot Games for an evening of formal presentations, quality Q&A, and good times.  First our hosts will present:

Automatic For the People – Automation for Humans (Not at Them)

Jeff Hackert, Riot Games
https://twitter.com/jchackert

This talk will touch lightly on the metaphysics of quality, a brief history of automation, and whether truth has a higher order of precedence than falsity . Where do the sharp edges, the black boxes, and the uncaught exceptions in our automation come from?  Why do systems designed to help, often hurt? Join me as we run with scissors through a brief history of automation design and infrastructure as code. Hopefully we will learn a bit about how to shift our fascination with convergence and idempotence into an appreciation of quality and a love for people who use our tools.

We'll also have a combination talk from two valued members of the Los Angeles Tech Community:

Bootstrap CDN, a Love Story

Justin Dorfman, MaxCDN
https://github.com/jdorfman
| https://twitter.com/jdorfman | http://www.linkedin.com/in/justindorfman/

Joshua Mervine, yp.com
https://github.com/jmervine | https://twitter.com/mervinejhttp://mervine.net

In this talk Justin will discuss how Bootstrap CDN came to be, how the stack has evolved and super sexy vanity metrics. Josh will discuss how he got involved, the stack (Version 2), continous deployment in action and why Node.js.

Riot Games is providing the venue and all food and drink.  We thank them for supporting us.

Please note the rules of the venue in the "How to find us" section above!  You must sign an NDA and provide ID.  You must RSVP.  If you are a recruiter, you are welcome to come but cannot recruit anyone, per their rules. If you do not follow these steps do not expect to be let in the building.  Please understand that this is a requirement of the venue and not LA DevOps.

See you there!

I don't see pizza and beer. My attendance is now questionable... but I do see food and drink. ;-)

Thanks! I really do enjoy seeing a bit of each meaning full tech company through these meetups. I really enjoy that when each of us pitches in on events like this we can make a better tech community in So Cal. Thanks to everyone for making this one of my favorite meetup groups!

Another great meetup, great crowd, create location (thanks Riot Games), and two great talks including post presentation chatter.

This was a great little meetup, with interesting attendees and a really thought-provoking talk about the wrong way to be right. I loved the idea of "the wake" left behind when you exclude important goals other than just being right. Also the side-polls turned into a very revealing discussion about mongoDB and how many DevOps folks feel about it.

Interesting meetup! I'd be happy to help with the website; I'm not much of a designer either, if you're looking for a custom layout, but I'd be happy to implement a theme for you drupal/wordpress/whatever custom templates http://steve.tchorzewski.info

It's been a goal of LA DevOps to expose as many shops and our members to one another as possible, and sometimes we have to comply with various rules at various venues. This is the first we've had with an NDA and I appreciate why one is unacceptable to some members. We'll have more meetups next year and will take this feedback into account when booking venues. Always feel free to message myself or another organizer with complaints or requests. This will be more productive than posting to a meetup thread attendees are watching just to say you aren't attending because of a venue requirement ;)

Forgive me for a stupid question, but why would i sign an NDA fir a Meetup? Or is this a riot game NDA? What is it for?

    October 28, 2013

    • Josie

No lawyer, investor, entrepreneur or future entrepreneur I know would ever sign an NDA. But I guess you won't get any of those coming :)

I'm sure some will. And I'm looking forward to seeing what this group can do. But I think I'll have to pass too unfortunately.

Did you ask Sandy or is she working late?

      October 28, 2013

    • Benjamin W. S.

She's out today :(. I'm going to have to bail anyway. As the day wore on, my body has decided to rebel against being healthy.

I'm looking forward to this meetup. Good job gettibg Riot Games as a venue!Normally I'd never sign an NDA just to go to a meetup, so it's good I worked at Riot and already signed one!
