LA Django Monthly Meeting

This month at LA Django we'll talk about the news and highlights from Euro DjangoCon, which was held in Zurich earlier this month (!

How many of you submitted proposals for talks at US DjangoCon? Last year we had a record number of submissions and speakers from the LA area represented.

There will also be time for 5-minute lightning talks. If you'd like to give a lighting talk, please email me your topic: alstrong2006 @ gmail . com

The meeting room is called "Santa Monica Training Room" and is located in building # 3200.

Park in the business park's lot. Take a ticket when you come in, and youll receive an exit pass when you leave.

Really enjoyed it and learned a lot. From both the presentations, as well as just being able to talk with the extremely talented, smart and helpful folks in the room who were willing to help a noobie. I'm new to coding but I'm really impressed by the welcoming sense of community in a group like this.

I liked the lightning talks as well. To follow up on Alexandra's talk, here's a recent article about how to store passwords securely:

Oh, and for anyone that was confused about threads vs forks, here's a nice writeup:

(Also provides some nice use cases as to why you would want to do either)

A correction to what I said during the meetup....

Django 1.3 -> 1.4 moved from SHA1 to SHA2 w/ PBKDF2 as mentioned in the slides on the topic.

Here's a good link covering three of the hashing algorithms out there, with arguments for and against (note: I somewhat disagree that bcrypt, being based on Blowfish, is in the same category as scrypt, which is new as of 2009)

My quick roundup of DjangoCon Europe: Awesome learning experience, Jessica McKellar is amazing, our talk went well as did most talks, and I led the giant refactor of the Django CBV docs.
