Lancaster Freethought Society
Promoting positive atheism and the separation of church and state.
It is an exciting time to be a nonbeliever in the U.S. There are more people coming to reason in this country than at any other time in the past. Membership in atheist organizations is growing steadily and more people are standing up for their rights to be free from religion. The formation of the LFS is in response to the desire of Lancaster area free thinkers to become a part of this growing community. Our primary purpose is to provide a community for nonbelievers in the Lancaster area
and to provide a family friendly environment among like-minded individuals. We are not "Militant" atheists and don't hate all our religious counterparts even if we do not agree with their beliefs.
We have monthly meetings on the FIRST THURSDAY of every month and regular monthly pub nights that usually fall on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of the month. The meetings are structured meetings that may involve group discussions on a variety of subjects, a presentation from people within the group, or guest speakers that might talk on a large variety of topics that may involve religion, philosophy, science, psychology or any subject related in some way to freethought. Our meetings are civil and personal attacks are not allowed. Teens that are mature enough to handle the subject matter are welcome to attend as well.
We also have family events such as picnics and Solstice parties where members and their families can mingle, play games, and have a good time. We hold Ask An Atheist events in downtown Lancaster by Central Market several times throughout the months where the weather allows it.
In addition we try to interact with our local community in a positive way. This may involve setting up booths as local festivals or doing community outreach projects to help local charities such as Habitat for Humanity and the Lancaster Women's Winter Shelter (which was an interfaith collaboration) even if it is only by providing volunteers to help out. This is the type of "activism" we prefer to do although occasionally we need to speak out loud and clear when we encounter someone trying exert their religious ideology on those that are not a part of their particular faith.
You do not have to be a dues paying member of the Lancaster Freethought Society to attend most of our meetings or events. However, full members enjoy a few perks and privileges that those who are only meetup.com members do not. Some of these include the right to vote, run for officer positions, head committees, help guide our course, and to borrow books from our extensive freethought Lending library. Full LFS Membership Dues:
Adult Membership - $20/year
Family Membership $30/year
Student Membership $10/year
Senior Membership (65+) $10/year
