Infrared Photography | Assignment: My Passion

Presenter: Greg Benic

We'll touch briefly on the technical aspects including wavelength, and how different materials reflect and/or absorb infrared light. Since it is "invisible" light, we will also discuss stealth photography with a flash. Also related is using IR photography for forensics and to "see" through some clothing.

We will review what gear works and what doesn't. Same for software. We will discuss different ways to process the image and compare the IR images to "normal" color and black and white images. We will discuss the differences between a dedicated, converted camera versus using a filter.

Assignment: My Passion

Capture a little bit about yourself by telling the story of your passion through a photograph.

(NEW) A few reminders about some of the basic rules of the assignment:

  • Members may submit 2 photos.
  • Photos should be emailed to us the Wednesday prior to the Thursday meeting.

If you have any additional questions about submitting photos or the monthly assignment in general, consult the Assignment FAQ or the Upload Instructions by clicking on the links below:

Seemed more informative on the different types of infrared photography which was good to know, but I left that class still not understanding how I can do this on my own.

I've always been interested in IR photography and learned a lot! I'll have to try shooting film a bit and seeing how I like the look, even if it is just black and white.

There was someone (sorry, I forget who) that couldn't get their foliage white. I gave a partial answer. In my nervousness, I forgot to give the rest of the answer. If you go into Hue/Saturation, click the drop down box and choose a similar color, then click on the foliage. Photoshop chooses a range that is close. Just desaturate and it is white. If you would like some screenshots, I can provide that for you as well.

Greg did a great job of explaining how infrared is different and how to get started doing it. Now, if it just didn't have such a commitment involved—I'm not ready to convert a camera just yet.

Infrared talk was very well done. Thanks Greg. Although I will continue to shoot IR film. But it is a shame that Kodak stopped making the HIE. I won a Lancaster City Arts Grant in 1992 and used the Kodak HIE infrared film for the entire project. I got some fabulous images and did a gallery exhibit with over 30 framed peices from the project.

I enjoyed the presentation on Infared photography. I have no experience shooting infared, but Greg's presentation was well planned and delivered in a way that held my interest and attention.
