Photograph Cyclocross at Stoudts Brewing Company (Beer Consumption Optional)

On November 4, we have a chance to photograph the crazy sport of Cyclocross!

In Cyclocross, participants are abused by having to ride their road-style bicycles over mountain-bike style trails while being forced to dismount to climb over obstacles. Racing starts at 9 AM and runs through 2:45 PM. Of course, while at Stoudts it's a requirement to enjoy one of their delicious beers and perhaps a platter of German food.

When you've taken enough photos, you can wander through the antique mall and buy a loaf of the best fresh-baked bread in the county. Later, you can stop at Renninger's Antiques to hunt for that old camera you've been dreaming of.

You can do all this and have time to drive over to Greenfield for the 3 PM event. A full day of photo taking!

Thanks to Tom & Diane for putting this event together, and for bringing water for the photographers as well. It was neat to see such a crazy sport and fun to photograph as well.

There are waaay too many photos to comment on...so I'll just comment once here. Nice job, everyone. There were some great pics taken and some good times had. The hecklers comedy couldn't be captured on film...but I am still laughing over some of the things they were yelling.

I was glad there was mud. It made for better pictures. Another great meetup.

I enjoyed this racing event more than I thought I would! The banter and sportsmanship of the racers was entertaining and enjoyable. It's too bad that I missed meeting up with everyone from the group tho

Very interesting setting - I don't usually photograph sports. The mud really made for some good shots!

I wanted to thank everyone who braved the cold today and came out to photograph (and cheer on) the cyclists who negotiated the tough course. For me it is the cyclists that made it a fun event. They attacked the course with humor, even if they were running calf deep through the mud or were being heckled (a cyclocross tradition) at the designated heckle areas. I wanted to thank everyone that stuck around and cheered for Diane (not that Diane!) when she was struggling up the climb. I'm sure she appreciated it.

Oh, yes, there may have been some optional beer drinking and German food consumption by several meetup attendees. A fun event!

Diane and I will be in the start/finish before 9 AM. Once the event gets going we'll be wandering around. I have an Orange/Grey camera bag and will have a red ribbon hanging from it.

Does anyone have any basic tips for cycling photography? I will be doing some Internet research, naturally, but would love to know what the locals have to say.

The normal equipment that you have should be perfect for this event. Although a telephoto lens will be handy, we should be able to get very close to the participants so even prime lenses will be usable. Because the riders have to dismount there are opportunities to take photos where the riders are not going very fast, making it much easier to frame and freeze the action. It looks like it might be cloudy so it might be a good idea to consider using some fill flash. There will be people at this event that are very experienced and I'm sure will step in to help with any questions you might have.

Does anyone know if it ok to bring kids? My 15 yr old son and his best friend love cycling and would love to be able to watch cyclocross.
