Composition - Seeing the shot

Patterns work nicely. Used f/5.0 to narrow the area in focus.

This is very cool. My eye travel actually changes direction as I scan from front to back.

I also like the repeated pattern a lot and the 3D feel of the photo. I might prefer more depth of field to show more of the pattern in the foreground to be sharp. Still, a very dramatic shot and well done.

Neil, fascinating shot, but I have two (maybe 3 or 4) questions: What kind of lens did you use and at what aperture? and What is this and Where is it?

Jim - this is the top of the picnic table near the parking lot. My only lens (so far) is the EF-S 15-85. This was shot at 50mm focal length (80mm full frame equiv) and the aperture was f5.0. I chose a low angle towards the sun and not straight on with the grain or it would have looked more like a grid. It might have benefitted from a more square aspect (4:3) as opposed to 3:2, and maybe a bit more DOF...I definitely wanted the in focus area to be about a third of the way in.
