Cross-Platform Mobile App Development Part 1

  • Mar 13, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Cordova is a free and open source framework that allows you to create mobile apps using standardized web APIs for the platforms you care about. Which allows you to easily create apps using the web technologies you know and love: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Part 1 of 2

This session will cover basic mobile app development fundamentals.

• Dive into getting our first app using PhoneGap on an Android device.

• Create multiple projects for multiple platforms using Cordova 3.0

• Explore mobile JavaScript frameworks that play nice on a hand held device.

• Explore debugging tools to speed up your cross-platform app development.

• Show off some great apps created with Cordova(aka PhoneGap).

Some familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is prefered but not required. Part 1 is for an audience that wants to begin getting apps on their device with little to no mobile app development experience.  We will debunk some myths to understanding what hybrid mobile app development is and what its not, pros and cons, and is Cordova(aka PhoneGap) the right solution for your project.

What to Bring:

•  Laptop ( Mac or Windows is fine)

• Existing source code to test your new mobile app (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), [optional]

• If you have an extra Android phone lying around, bring it, so your peers can test their apps. Why Android? Because it will get us through development much faster.

• Your thinking Hats.

josue thanks for a great meetup. i never understood any of it as this was my very first session in the mobile app world. But the fact that you spent time with me and spoke to me 1 on 1 after and uploaded all the phone gap software on my mac and android so i can start playing around at home was amazing as i really want to learn to become a developer.

Unfortunately at the last min I was unable to attend. Is it still worthwhile to attend Part 2 without having done Part 1 first?

    • George M.

Sure. There will be a recording made available. You can watch that and listen to the Q and A before the next one.

It was a great introduction to a low-investment method to get started developing mobile apps! Great teacher!

It was cool talking to other people about their projects and what they do and are excited about when it comes to mobile.

The awesome parking at OPODZ is a little confusing. The awesome parking shares a driveway with a just-okay parking structure. If you're driving, it's the first driveway on your left after you pass OPODZ. Make sure you go in the left side of the driveway to get to the awesome parking!!!

Quick reminder: We are located one block away from the Little Tokyo Metro Station. So if you can, take the Metro. If not, there is parking on site - only $4 anytime after 4pm. There is also metered street parking (is more expensive), and strictly enforced by the City of LA - so be sure to keep an eye on that meter.
