Global Accessibility Awareness Day + LA Tech Happy Hour

Global Accessibility Awareness Day followed by LA Tech Happy Hour

On May 9, we invite you to participate in Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). The purpose of the day is to get people talking, thinking and learning about digital (web, software, mobile, etc.) accessibility and users with different disabilities. The target audience of GAAD is the design, development, usability, and related communities who build, shape, fund and influence technology and its use. While people may be interested in the topic of making technology accessible and usable by persons with disabilities, the reality is that they often do not know how or where to start. Awareness comes first.

We have invited Molly Holzschlag to speak! Followed by a healthy Q&A.

Find out more about GAAD here.

TOPIC

The warm-up talks will demonstrate exactly what it is we're talking about when we say that every web site and app needs accessibility.

Molly is a very active speaker on Open Web technologies, web design and accessibility and was the 2004–2006 group lead for the Web Standards Project (WaSP).

When the Web was invented, it was done so not only with a set of open, free tools, but a set of core principals. Perhaps the most important reason the Web exists is to be - as its inventor Tim Berners-Lee has maintained throughout its 20 years - for /everyone/. Join Molly as she takes us through those core principles and discusses the question why accessibility is not in the mainstream Web developer/designer methodology for ALL Web sites and applications. The Web is, after all, for everyone.

SPEAKER

Molly works to define and create effective organizational standards and best practices with countless worldwide developers and designers working the Web via her books, articles, conferences and consulting. With over 25 years of online experience, Molly's strengths lie not only in the technologies and practices of today, but in understanding the complexities of how challenges emerged, and ways in which to manage those challenges in the rapid evolution of the Web.

Molly currently participates as a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Invited Expert on the CSS Working Group, chairs the CSS Accessibility Community Group and was previously an Invited Expert on the HTML and GEO Working Groups. Molly currently works for Knowbility, for whom she teaches classes on Open Web technologies such as HTML5 and ARIA, with a strong emphasis on using inclusive design to overcome accessibility barriers.
