Ruby Made Simple: Hash Initializers by Alf Mikula

In this installment of basic instruction for beginning rubyists, you'll get a brief introduction to hash initializers in Ruby.

Act-Fancer Cybernetick Hyper Weapon: How we rolled our own advanced search using Rails and Postgres by Dan Walmsley

Like many Rails applications, NationBuilder built its original advanced search features using out-of-the-box gems and ActiveRecord scopes. And, also like many Rails applications, we eventually outgrew the scalability and querying power offered by those solutions. After weeks spent evaluating dedicated search services such as Solr, ElasticSearch, Sphinx and others we eventually came back to Postgres - and discovered a novel approach using only core Rails libraries to build a simple, scalable and flexible search subsystem.

Dan Walmsley is CTO of NationBuilder, an online Community Organising System. Prior to working at NationBuilder he was CTO at Purpose, a consultancy that builds online social movements. He has also performed and directed improv, sketch and stand-up at festivals and comedy rooms in the US, UK and Australia since 1995.

There should be lots of free street parking downtown, but if you can't find free parking there's a convenient lot right across the street.

Hey everyone! I plan to have a talk at this L.A. Ruby meetup called "I love my job". I'm not going into the details, but long story short, I'd love if you could just answer one simple question > It's anonymous and no need to login. I want to know what are the things that makes you get angry and hateful about your job as a programmer.
You can range in every domain, from things like "I hate myself because I don't write enough tests" to "I hate that the room is so cold" to "I hate the commute"

You don't have to answer now, just do it when the thought comes in your mind "OH, I hate this", and just write it down! Thank you!
