Lead Ruby Engineer / Ruby Architect
Fulltime - Direct Hire
Los Angeles, CA

In this position, you'd be the primary architect for a website that spans the World. This will mean that you'll drive the technical vision and implementation of the web and mobile products and manage a team of 7-12 Developers & Engineers that will follow your lead in creating a truly mega-site (being relied on by users in every time zone.) If you want to speak on the subject of architecting a worldwide success - this will certainly give you something big to talk about at RubyConf 2012 or RailsConf 2012.

Day to day tasks will include being the point of contact for all technical aspects, driving technical design, manage testing, managing bug fixes & issues, etc. You'll also be the expert on scaling and performance - advising and creating systems to scale. Since you're the Lead Engineer, you'll have to manage code reviews and choose how to structure your team to mentor and grow in each of their roles. I would think that you're the type that wants to keep your 'hands in the code' - so you might plan on spending up to 50% of your time coding too.

If you want to be the driving force in a company that relies on its digital products to change people's lives, and you want to create a team environment that jumps at the opportunity to be technology leaders - this could be the role for you. And we should talk soon.

This is a worldwide (but semi-small) company with lofty goals and plenty of backing to make this into something great. We need to find a Leader that can get excited about it - and really own it all. This is not an industry giant that 'kinda' wants to do something great, this is a place that plans on doing something great NOW!

If you're located somewhere other than Los Angeles but this would be the perfect opportunity for you - don't worry about it. We can work out the details and still make it happen.

Everyone expects a bulleted list of qualifications so I guess I have to throw some down. I'd really expect the right person to:

  • Have leadership experience scaling a web property for incredible increases in capabilities.
  • Have a history of directing the design and implementation of cutting edge features from concept to completion.
  • Extensive experience in web and mobile development.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and testing for content focused sites, social media type sites, content management systems, and even E-commerce/stores/shopping carts, etc.
  • Experience in Search Algorithms, Search Engine Optimization, and utilizing third party API's.

Technologies in play right now:
  • Extensive use of Ruby and Ruby on Rails, Javascript, Ajax, PostgreSQL, HTML, CSS, and some Flash.
  • Mobile application development/iPhone application development
  • Amazon S3
  • Database design and development
  • Content Management Systems
  • Photo and video web/mobile technologies and applications
  • Mapping/geo-mapping technologies
  • Software bug tracking tools

If you're interested - please apply by emailing me at: [address removed] and I'll get back to you as quickly as possible.
