Meetup Description: About the Presentation:

SearchMonkey is an application platform that allows external developers to create applications that enrich the presentation of a Yahoo search result. Instead of using automated methods to second-guess the relevant parts of the result page, SearchMonkey applications rely on structured data to understand the object that is described on the page. This deeper understanding of content allows generating more compelling and richer result displays, leading users to the right results in a shorter time and thereby improving the overall search experience. In this presentation we discuss SearchMonkey, the adoption of structured data on the Web, and some lessons learned while working with semantic technologies and helping others to implement semantic markup. Lastly, we give an impression of Yahoo’s plans for the future in the area of semantic search.

About the Speaker:

Peter Mika is a researcher at Yahoo! Research in Barcelona. He received his BS in computer science from Eötvös Loránd University and his MSc and PhD in computer science (cum laude) from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His interdisciplinary work in social networks and the Semantic Web earned him a Best Paper Award at the 2006 International Semantic Web Conference and a First Prize at the 2005 Semantic Web Challenge. He has been cochair of the Semantic Web Challenge since 2007. Mika is the youngest member elected to the editorial board of the Journal of Web Semantics. He is the author of the book 'Social Networks and the Semantic Web' (Springer, 2007). In 2008 he has been selected as one of "AI's Ten to Watch" by the editorial board of the IEEE Intelligent Systems journal.

Joe - that was a great meetup session. Has the presentation slide been posted? Perhaps we should open a slideshare account to post presentations from these meetups if the presenters are willing to let us post/submit on their behalf.
