My eleven year old son and I went and did arrive at 3am at Union Station and were at the beginning of the non-ticketed area.  We could see the Inaugural stand in the distance and were opposite the first Jumbotron on the mall and could view all the detail that was going on in the Capitol and on the stand.  The sound was great; Aretha singing "My Country Tis of Thee was very moving.  Obama's speech was perfect.  Everyone of the mall ws silent, listening intently.  Except for one outburst in response to him describing our new relationship with the rest of the world, there wasn't alot of hoopla, just everyone listening to every word, taking it all in, (I particularly noted "restoring science to it's rightful place)

President Obama is an inspiration to me because I now know that the vision of
one person can truly make a change in the world.
I can make a change in the world. Even if that 'world' is my local
community, my place of work, my neighbor. I can make
a difference in the lives of people around me, if I just give a little of
myself, a little of my time.
His nomination acceptance speech at the DNC was the turning point for me. I was
blown away & felt compelled to be a part of
his campaign. I can't explain it. I just get chills when I listen to his
speeches. Its like he's speaking to my soul.
I have never been politically or socially active in the past. But I just
can't sit around anymore, waiting for someone else to stand
up for my beliefs. I have to be the one to take that step.
I was in DC for the inauguration. I walked for miles among millions, stood in
the cold among thousands, cheered for change with
hundreds & shared the moment with a handful of friends. And even though I
didn't quite hear his entire speech (there were ambulances
going by), and I couldn't quite see the screen (didn't make it to the
mall; we were a street away; apparently i
should have arrived at 3am and camped out!), and I couldn't feel my toes
(uhmm... uggs & a thick pair of socks didn't cut it),
I will always remember being apart of that glorious moment in time.
Gillian

ps. Jules- I enjoyed reading about your experience at the inauguration. Do you
have any pics of the rainbow & bird??
