4th of July Kayak/Canoe in the Pinebarrens

Canoeing and kayaking on the Oswego or Wading River in the NJ Pinebarrens. You are welcome to bring guests.

For those joining us...

  • Please be there before 11AM so we can register together.
  • To speed up the registration process, you can download the waiver form and bring it with you. Go to http://www.mickscanoe... for more information.
  • We will meet at the picnic tables under the trees behind the building.

We will be renting at Micks Pine Barrens Canoe and Kayak Rental. Cost per person will depend on type of boat and the total number of people renting that size boat. The plan is to have everybody be there by 11AM, on the water by noon, out by 2:30 or 3PM, and on your way to anything else you might want to do that day by 4PM. Chatsworth is about an hour from Moorestown. Not including tax, maximum cost is $50 for two to rent a canoe or two person kayak, and $40 for a single kayak. Rates drop when we get five or more boats two-person boats or six or more single person boats, so this is just for your planning. You will be paying individually. Micks has changing facilities, a small shop, picnic benches, a large parking lot. They provide all the equipment including life preservers. I believe you can bring you own canoe or kayak and they will transport it--let me know if you would be doing this.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • The river does flow slightly, and while it carries you along, you will be paddling to navigate bends, obstacles in and hang over the river (or large stream).
  • You can stay dry except maybe getting in and out. I'd plan on getting wet, which includes wearing clothes that won't stain due to cedar water.
  • Or wear bathing suit you don't mind possibly staining a little in case the water has a lot of 'cedar' tint to it. (Thanks for the tip, David)
  • Wear old sneakers or tight fitting sandals or other water resistant shoes. The river bottom can be muddy at times, and loose shoes or flip flops may stick, and thus stay behind. Might be uncomfortable for you and for the river. I have seen tight fitting shoes for sale in the rental office. Styles and sizes may be limited.
  • Bring water and something to eat, and plan on taking a lunch break about an hour into the trip on the river. Put the stuff into a water resistant container that can be tied to the canoe or fit at your feet in the kayak. A cooler will fit into a canoe. There is little room on a kayak, at least a one person kayak. A gallon zip lock bag can fit behind the seat. Best to keep your food with you, in case one of the crafts choose to linger behind or we way ahead!
  • Children are welcome. At most I think you can get three people to a canoe. Kayaks come in one or two person version, and I don't think you can fit a third on a kayak.
  • If you bring children, they will be captive for two to three hours. There is no getting out early. smile
  • Leave anything that is sensitive to moisture at home or in the car, or bring a water tight container. Folks have brought cameras at their own risk, and photos later are appreciated.
  • The river is mostly shaded by trees, although at noon there will be more direct sun light than usual. Sun tan lotion is worth considering, IMO.
  • There are changing room for before and after the trip. There is an outdoor shower.

Intention is to take the Evans Bridge to Beaver Branch segment. Details and photos, maps, and movies are available. More details to come. Any questions, please let me know! meetup123 @ brabeck27 . com

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
