Startup Happy Hour / City of Houston Hackathon Kickoff Party

Get ready... I'm going to pack the next sentence with as many occurrences of the words "Houston" and "Startup" as is humanly possible.

The Houston Lean Startup Circle presents the Houston Startup Happy Hour for the City of Houston Open Innovation Hackathon at START Houston!

What does that mean? It means you should come out to START and have a few drinks in celebration of an upcoming hackathon.

More details about the Hackathon:

The Open Innovation Hackathon is a day-long event devoted to collaborative creation and coding that addresses City and citizen needs. Over 24 hours, hackers pitch ideas, form teams, and build something awesome for their community-- like a website, a mobile app, or an insightful data visualization. No need for fancy presentations or polish: just solutions that benefit the City of Houston and your community.

Is this a good opportunity for an entry-level economics major to come and network for a job?

I am busy on Friday but I am interested in Saturday. A few of the projects look interesting. If I show up on Saturday is it too late? My strongest current skill is really SQL. But I have used lots of other things...

    Hi Everyone,
This is first time to houstonhackathon. If we work on a project, should we provide solution, design and complete the development on the same day or do we have time period to deliver the project.

hi Balaji. this is our first houston hackathon! if you want to submit your work for a prize, it will need to be done by ~6p on Saturday. however, you can keep working on your project, and you'll have a way to keep the City up to date.

I asked this question to Contact Us for the website and got this response:

Q: If I join as solo do I get to work with a team, or is solo completely that, solo/independent? When do we find out what access we have to what data? Thanks, John

A: You can form a team or join a team. I'd suggest checking out the happy hour on Friday night to meet people, and joining hacker league to review projects. There is also a link on to the code for Houston data portal. That will give you a full range of data sets. If you have any questions, please let me know!

Sorry if this type of self promotion is frowned upon but I quietly released my first iPhone app this week! My app is called DrinkMagnet and its a happy hour finder for Houston and Seattle.

I'll be at the Startup Happy Hour at Start on the 17th but I'd love to hear input anytime :-)
