The rise and relative decline of the persecuting state

Today 7:30pm Enterprise 318 Lecture by Mason Professor: Mark Koyama The talk will examine why states in medieval Europe began to persecute witches, Jews, and heretics, why these persecutions intensified in period of the Renaissance and Reformation before diminishing in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. By studying the mechanisms that were responsible both for the initial increase in persecutions and for the ultimate decline, I hope to shed light on the rise of religious toleration and political and economic liberalism in the period before the industrial revolution.
